    Pres,

Your trailer sound very interesting and custom. Who made it for you? What brand? The reversed axles and raised track allows you the open the car door for easier entering and exiting, correct?

    Thanks,

    Roy

The pictures have the correct orientation on my devices, so you’re just stirring up trouble with Jon.

Looks like a simple upgrade. I searched for the part numbers 23528306 and 23528307 but could not find anyone that had them in stock. Where did you get them?

Prevost coaches had 470hp and the maximum torque for the transmission of 1550lb-ft of torque until the new design of XL2, and slightly larger radiator. Then they went to 500hp, but same torque for that gen of Allison. When EGR motors came out, they call it 515hp, but still 1550lb-ft torque. much larger radiator and CAC. Of course in 2011 (2010 engine requirement) the Volvo D13’s could only make up to 500HP, so that is where they are even today. A big difference is that Allison made some design changes to their transmission, allowing for up to 1850lb-ft of torque, which torque is what you feel about an engine when you pull away from a stop sign.

Be cautious if someone has an “engine HP enhancer” on a coach you are looking at or tempts you to get one. Remember, everything about why the engine does not have more HP or torque evolve around cooling and transmission limitations. When Newell started using the 600HP Cat C16 they had to use the Eaton Autoshift, and automated manual transmission to get one that would allow more than 1550lb-ft torque input, and those are awful to drive. The engine modifiers can cause overheating, transmission damage, or rear differential failure in differing conditions. Also drive shaft to twist off.

Just giving people some things to think about…

My first Prevost was a 97 Marathon XL and it had dual 12v volt pumps. What I liked best about that setup, there were warning lights on the lower dash panel that lit up if the pumps where running while driving. That was a great feature in the event you had a water leak while driving.

I would not replace my current Headhunter Mach 5, you can’t beat the home like pressures no matter how many water sources are turned on.

What does the PLC control? What are the inputs/outputs?

There are lots of programmable microcontrollers with lots of input/output options available dirt cheap. The software development environments that come with those microcontrollers are easy to learn. Might be a fun project to build a replacement.

sorry, been crazy busy on a 1900s gut job Reno for my daughter and haven’t been on the site in a while. Do you still need the info? As it happens I am finally out in the bus up near lake george dry camping but could send some picks. I used 2 different techniques. Behind the sofa and dinette areas I used normal paper backed wood veneer and contact cement. Gets your heart pounding but it worked great and looks awesome. In the bedroom I used real wood wallpaper. Was not cheap but extremely flexible. Looks equally good but had issues with bubbles. I think it was installer error. End result is amazing

H.J.: You said a couple of things I’d like to comment on.

“Somewhere in the process money has to be sent to secure the coach in advance of final inspection.” I would be very unlikely to send any private seller money on a coach until I had seen the coach personally and met the owner … unless the seller was someone I was acquainted with and trusted like Buddy Brown or Dan Hilger or George Prentice or a guy Jeff Rowe said was someone who could be trusted.

I would never send a private seller any cash to “hold” a coach until I could travel to see the coach. We lost one or two good ones because we couldn’t travel and losing a coach for that reason I’m wiling to take.

Once I’ve looked at a coach, decided it met our requirements, made a decision this was the coach for us, determined that the seller hadn’t misrepresented it to badly, and either the price was where I thought I could negotiate a satisfacctory deal with the seller or we’d agreed upon a price contingent upon satisfactory inspection … then and only then would I consider giving the seller between $1,000 and $5,000 contingent upon satisfactory inspection and negotiation of a price to “hold the coach”.

“but what are the other things I should be asking without getting too far in the weeds and the owner and he hangs up on me?”

I would counsel you to ask anything you want to. When someone is selling a six figure motorcoach there should be no questions off limits regarding its condition, maintenance, or age. Period, no discussion.

“And if a surveyor is necessary can you use someone with only plastic coach experience? That would be my last resort. If you’ve never owned a Prevost (or another motorhome/motorcoach), a good plastic coach surveyor is better than you or nothing.

“This is my first motorhome and going it alone from the inspection standpoint is not something that fills me with good thoughts!” Most of us will agree with you on that one!

“Where would you go to find a Prevost surveyor?” When you find that coach you think you’re going to want to have someone inspect, I’d recommend starting right here. Tell us about where the coach is located, what kind it is, and ask who would feel comfortable looking at it for you. If you find one in Racine, Wisconsin I’d be more than happy to look at it with you because its an hour away, especially if it a Liberty. I can probably find the more obvious subtle stuff, but keep in mind its not going to be like Jeff Rowe or Jon Wehrenberg looking at a coach for you. I think if you posted a request for a “Prevost surveyor” for a specific locale, you’d be surprised who might offer their services or even volunteer. You might get two or three good guys or gals to look at it for you.

“This is my first motorhome and going it alone from the inspection standpoint is not something that fills me with good thoughts!” I was in the same boat as you are. Our Prevost was the first RV, camper, motorhome, etc. that I ever owned (and will be our last coach). Fortunately it was 18 miles from Jeff Rowe’s shop and I was fortunate to have the best in the business look at it. Hopefully you’ll find a coach that is accessible to someone who can give you an accurate assessment of the coach when you get to that point.

Go one ebay and keep looking for a used Nexus reader with DDEC software for your coach. If you are lucky you can find one with the transmission and ABS software also. I have paid as little as $250 to as much as $1000, but I end up with an ability to read all codes, all data, and to reset codes.

What would be ahuge help would be if you put some coach specific information in your signature line. There are a lot of variations of Prevost slides as well as numerous other slide room manufacturers such as HWH, Valid and even Vantare.

If all you need are O rings they are pretty generic and if you measure the diameter and the thickness you can likely get new ones of the correct size for a few pennies.

January 23, 2017 at 4:06 pm in reply to: Wheels 315 Vs 365 Tires ?

Mixing tire sizes was one of the worst things that Prevost ever did.

Every one of us with 365 tires never ever want’s a flat or blowout because we have the potential to be out of service for days. At least with all 120 or 315 tires the lack of availability was merely annoying because we had some reasonable options. As soon as having two different tire and wheel sizes on our coach became standard annoyance doesn’t describe how we feel when we find replacements are not readily available.

And to add insult to injury the 365 tires make a hell of a noise going over small bumps and expansion joints.

Well another dumb question, but if I take the end cap off and see the valve, what is the actual repair on the valve to repair the leak? Do I need to reseal something?

I assume there’s no video on this in the library?
