Detroit D60 Diamond Seal Leak Preventative Maint
So as we are buttoning things up with the Prevost chassis and Detroit maintenance at TEC Equipment. The technician tells me about a bracket upgrade from Detroit to help stabilize the gear housing which helps prevent diamond seal leaks from occurring in 2001 YR and earlier D60’s. The upgrade gets a small mention in Detroit Service Manual.
Our coach has 244,000 miles on it. Good catch by technician.
So here is the upgrade in attached pictures. Go look at you motors if you own 2001 or earlier to see if mod is done. If you hate oil leaks ….the diamond seal is a $1,200.00 to $1,700.00 gasket repair.
This mod is what prevents future problems and will help stabilize the upper gear case.

Had my Bracket upgrade & Valve job done by DD in Ocala, which was a great recommendation by TRUK.

Had them installed last night. This is a very important mod for the motor especially when you put miles on it. The vibration at the top of gear case over time will lead to the diamond seal gasket prematurely failing and causing a leak.

Had mine done at Ocala like Tim. If you have an oil leak up high behind the compressor, chances are it’s the diamond seal.

Looks like a simple upgrade. I searched for the part numbers 23528306 and 23528307 but could not find anyone that had them in stock. Where did you get them?

We do see leaks more on the compressor side of the front cover. When we discover a clients who “put on the miles” we do recommend this. Since the front cover is a 2-piece set up, we warn folks that if the crack ends up being located in the back cover piece, that is actually touching the block, that part is hard to source, versus the front piece that bolts to the back piece. I wrote this several different ways and it still sounds confusing. So sorry for any mis-communication.

Yes, series 60 and Brian can probably tell you what years, later vintage than my 2002 didn’t have that problem, but I don’t know what years.

My chassis is an ’03 and mine did not have the bracket. I bought mine from a local Detroit dealer, and installed it myself, very easy to do.

I have the right side smaller bracket on my coach already. I ordered the left bracket but wanted to know if anyone knew part number for the flanged bolts that will go through the gear case and thread into the bracket.
Im guessing they will be about 5 inches long, metric, and have a 15mm head on them like all the others.

My brackets will be here today I will go to the local parts and get some bolts to install, Patrick why do you think the bolts are metric? What bolts did you use?

The bolts that go into the head are metric. My large bracket came threaded and I believe they were 7/16″. I wound up making a couple hdwe store trips for grade 8 (metric grade 10.9) bolts, flat and lock washers. You might be able to re-use some of the head bolts but I wanted longer to compensate for the width of the new brackets.

I am about to get to the bottom of this! Our Detroit dealer is lazy here and wont do anything without current part numbers, or anything else that would require them to contact Detroit.
I called Brian at American Fleet who passed me on to Danny. They were very helpful and familiar with the updated bracket. He didn’t have any bolts at the moment he could look at but told me from memory they were M10 X 1.50 pitch. I ordered a partial thread bolt that was 10.9 grade, flanged head, & 130mm long.
The bolts are here but the bracket is with the bus…so I will find out soon enough if they are the right kind.
