I am at the track for the Coke Zero 400. Driver’s coaches are right behind me. I’ll get a general count tomorrow if it ever quits raining.

Is this sort of failure common with other sizes and/or manufacturers? A little voice in the back of my head is whispering, “Maybe this is related to the 365 production shortage?”

What about wiring? Would any of the wires involved have to be up graded too?

I have 4 8D 12V batteries set up to provide 12 and 24V for the house. The inverters are a pair of Outback pure sine wave inverters of 4000 watts. I do not know the exact model because of the lackof paper work, but I believe the chargine current is adjustable. Assuming it is If I am readng correctly I do not need much more than a set of batteries of equivalent power.

But my reservations are as follows. It appears the cost of batteries alone are between 3 and 4 times the cost of equivalent AGM batteries so to make any economic sense can I be assured the life will be 15 to 20 years because I throw my batteries away every 5 years?

There have been reported issues with some Li installations and batteries are not available for direct replacement. The original design was changed and the newest designs do not make a substitution of old design with new design the best choice because of some incompatibility issues. Are the batteries being suggested for updating systems of an established design that has been unchanged for a decade or more, or more specifically are they directly interchangeable with older batteries such as we might experience with current LA batteries.

Does an autostart system have to be modified to work with batteries such as Li?

Obsolescence on some coaches and their systems are beginning to be an issue with some older systems noo longer supported which translates into expensive repairs. How can an investment to Li for all the associated benefits be protected against obsolescence, especially in the working parts?

While an expensive option when new, for the vintage of coach you are looking at there is no longer a premium for having OTR. You get better heating in the winter too. So why not go for it? You lose a bit of storage. Other than that there are few downsides.

We have 3 Cruiseairs with OTR in our ’99 XL. It is a good combination. Without OTR, I’d want at least 4 Cruiseairs plus driver A/C. After owning the coach for 5 years I have finally read up on charging the OTR myself. It was straightforward with the help from the folks in this forum.

Harry, Just tell um it’s 9 years old and go in. Done! Yours probably looks better that 75% of the other newer ones sitting there.

I too replaced my Bat Wing just before this trip.

Works well. On my Liberty my unit is mounted on the flat section on the rear flat section before the spoiler. This is a little far away from the controller – as it states “no more than 30′ cable length from the antenna to the controller”. – certainly I am well over the 30′ as my controller resides in the table behind the drivers chair. Reception is good, but not a big upgrade. In the coming weeks I will attempt to test this with a shorter cable feed to decide if I want to relocate the control panel for better overall performance.

I’ll let you know how that test works out with some before and after signal measurements for those of you with similar wiring schemes. (Liberty for sure – probably not most Marathons)

Some years ago I was stopped at a traffic signal (RED) behind a Female driving an old Neon. In her left hand she held a cell phone and was in active conversation with someone. In her right hand she held a lit cigarette. I thought the Neon had to be equipped with an automatic transmission. The traffic signal changed to green and the Neon pulled off – and the driver had to shift gears. It was a manual transmission.

So see Jon, it is possible to do all these things when using a manual transmission, unless what you are really saying is your 10 year old Vette is not as sophisticated as an old Neon!

    Brett…

Gotta agree with Doug & Mary…enjoy what you have…if a bus is meant to be, it will happen down the road.

As far as the trust factor goes – as with about anything these days – “Trust…But verify “. Unfortunately it seems very few folks have heard of Cowboy Ethics these days…and fewer still try to live by them (https://carolynmappleton.com/cowboy-ethics-ten-principles-to-live-by/).

My definition/expectation of “excellent” may not be anywhere close to what yours is, and both of us may be far removed from someone who deals & sees a wide cross section of buses that are on the market. In the final analysis, the only one who can make the “correct” interpretation for you is you. Unfortunately it seems we gotta kiss a lotta frogs…

Thanks for the replies. I have a pre-DDEC 8V92-TA Silver. I’m sure there are 12v needs, but I’m fairly certain the equalizers aren’t meeting them. Not only are the +12v terminals on both equalizers putting out 25-ish volts, but the only cable coming off the +12v terminals to something other than the other equalizer is running to the load side of a relay that goes to the main bus electrical cut off. It looks like that relay is controlled by something in the engine electrical compartment, but I haven’t chased it down yet.

    1. Shouldn’t I get 12 volts to ground from the +12v outputs on the equalizers?

    2. What would the 12v outputs typically go to? I’m wondering if someone shifted those circuits to the 12v house bank at some point. I can’t think of anything electrical that isn’t working right now.

I’ll dig into my maintenance manuals to see about 12v circuits on the chassis, but I’m feeling a little stumped at the moment. Fortunately this sort of troubleshooting is actually enjoyable for me, and I always learn a little or a lot!

This is the 60-50 feeding what I think is a relay?

Thank you one and all for your comments, I find it fascination how you guys found your coaches. I found a coach that checked all our boxes pretty quickly but my wife and I need to put things on the back burner for a little while.

One thing I here you saying is “get out and look at some coaches”! Living in a small town like I do there’s nothing around me for a couple hundred miles. But I know you’re right, just walking through some coaches, opening the bay, and engine compartment doors would be a good place for me to start.

OLYMPIA LUXURY COACHES in La Vergne, TN is about 4 hours from me and looks like the closest place I can start. They currently have 9 Prevost in inventory and three of them are 2001-2 & 3. Not the years I’m after but I think I may drive up there next week just to do as you say, “look around”!

PS. Jimmy I just read your post where you said; “But I knew I had to get the right coach first time out or my wife would not accept the “RV lifestyle”. There’s some truth in what you say! 🙂
