Yes Al, your understanding is consistent with what the tech explained to me on chassis that are adjustable. Adjustability did not start he said until a couple years after mine.

    On to Jeff’s tomorrow.

In the curbside OTR ac condenser bay is a light gray plastic box that houses R38 & 39, and CB 8 & 9 which are 120 amp/24vdc. For CBs 8 & 9 there are two resettable red buttons protruding out of the bottom of the box. As I mentioned previously we had one of the silver solenoid/relay fail(R38 or 39). They have a limited lifespan. Easy inexpensive fix.

IMO, if one of these CBs trip, there is a something bad wrong. I hope its only a relay.

I will chime in since I’m today and tomorrow putting new steers on. I agree with everyone else that the bottom line is the wheels should be tightened to spec torque. How we get there is my thoughts. Not saying it is the correct way and not recommending it to anyone.

I find it pretty easy to change these big tires, so I have always done the procedure myself, at least for the calorie burn. After jacking and blocking the body and axle seperately, I use a IR2145 3/4 inch impact that is rated at 1000 to 1350 foot pounds to remove. Then I use an IR2135 1/2 inch impact to install that is rated up to 600 foot pounds but is adjustable. So I set it down to the spec torque, and do not follow with a torque wrench. I find the four foot 600 foot pound capacity torque wrench to be too cumbersome for one person to work with. And the wheel needs to be prevented from turning when using a torque wrench. The Porsche also takes 450 foot pounds on it’s center lock nut, so I bought a torque multiplier which has a planetary gear set that yields 3:1 ratio. It’s actually 3.3:1, but there is a 10% mechanical loss. With this, one can use a 1/2 inch torque wrench about twenty inches long set at 150 foot pounds.

As Charlie Daniels would say “that’s how we do it.”

Most places that do tire service on trucks and heavy equipment use 1″ air guns that are set for the proper torque. You can request that it be checked w/ wrench. I would always have it re-checked after a mobile service call. Geo.

January 19, 2017 at 8:19 am in reply to: Toad Tow Bars ?

As long as Tom reminded me of another issue, here is the situation for all to learn from.

First, when you are preparing to leave for a trip an inspection is necessary. The best inspection is done alone so nobody breaks the train of thought. When a toad is involved in the inspection it has to be understood there are a lot of ways something can be wrong or go wrong, and while we kid a lot about it, even the most simple error or ommission is going to have consequences.

We joked about tires above. But start by making sure the tow bar is secure and locked at both ends. Are the safety chains or cables secure and attached. Is the wiring harness in place and do the lights work?

If the toad has supplemental braking is it in place? If the toad requires some action to save battery power such as removal of a fuse has that been taken care of.

Is the transmission or transfer case or both set for towing? If the toad has a steering wheel lock is that released so the front tires of the toad will turn. If not do you carry enough cash or have credit cards for the new tires? Is the toad parking brake released so all tires will roll? If not do you carry enough cash or have credit cards for the new tires?

We can joke about stuff like that, but the topic of tow bars, tires and toads is pretty serious and in the real world we all have to check and double check.

Did I just get called a butt head???????

If all valves are open, it may have air in the line or an obstruction in the heater coolant loop. Are the heaters full of water, may have a device that doesn’t allow coolant flow without water. Any chance there were plugs that didn’t get removed from the new heater line? Are you on high idle to get the pump to run faster?

Just suggesting some what if’s…. You could also pull the lines back off and see if you can force air through the coils to confirm nothing was obstructing the flow.

Jon: Do you think if Gerald had polished his slack adjusters on a regular basis that might have prevented the freeze-up?
