There are two filters, the one with the water seperator as shown and the filter towards the front of the engine. They are easy to change. Turn off the fuel valve next to the filter to prevent fuel from siphoning back to tank. Disconnect the wire going to the water separator, separate the filter from the water separator. Clean out the water seperator, refill with CLEAN fuel. Do the same for the primary filter. Don’t forget to turn on your fuel valve. The engine will start right up. Carry a few spare filters in case you get contaminated fuel on the road.

Some of this basic maintenance is very simple, but the “experts” sometime still manage to screw it up by rushing things. Before I started doing basic maintenance myself, I went to a truck stop. They put on the wrong fuel filter which introduced a big vacuum leak. I was unable to leave their facility and they suggested to get towed. Not their fault they said, your bus just happened to die here. I finally put slight air pressure into the tank and fuel was cascading out from the primary filter. They changed it to the correct filter and everything was fine.

There is no magic to swapping fuel filters.

Before I remove the old one I fill its replacement with fuel, lubricate the gasket and have it handy to install. I don’t bother turning off the fuel although I have a valve. I just spin off the old one and spin on the new one. I lose very little fuel, and never lose the prime. As far as the supplemental fuel filter that is typically in addition to the two spin on filters, I pull the filter, install the new filter, and refill the filter housing before closing it up. On my coaches that had the Racor fuel filter / water separator I made sure the filter was a 30 micron so it did not choke off flow, and I also made sure the visible bowl was free of water or contaminents.
