Had a very nice visit with Hish and Sue. Very nice people, enjoyed meeting them, and hope to see them again in the future.

Harry: How many chassis batteries do you have? Look at them very closely. Are they all the same manufacturer? Are all the markings identical? Its important to ascertain and ensure if all the batteries are the same and of very similar age. Maybe you can find a date code on them, post it, and someone here can decipher it to a date and month. Do this to confirm what the seller said regarding the age of the batteries. Trust, but verify.

Harry I hope realize how lucky you are. You’re 70 miles from Jeff Rowe; I’m 700. Many of his regular customers live further away . I’m not going to BS you (like some other guys on this forum might), but we’re at Jeff’s shop having the oil in the generator changed and a couple of other things taken car of. We happened to be in the general area which made the trip much shorter.

I won’t speak for Jeff on what he will or wont work on, but you’ll find he’ll draw a firm line on the shop floor showing where his chassis/engine/transmission expertise starts to wane.

You’ll also find that if your Prevost Community dues are current and paid-up, Jeff’s charges are much more reasonable than what you posted above.

Most of us can only dream of being that near Jeff’s shop.

Tom, I don’t get it either! I tried it with Google Chrome and now with Safari and I get nothing but what shows on my first post, a big blank space with an icon. I just tried Firefox and the same thing, no picture!

I admit I don’t know much about Prevost but I am computer literate and agree with you that it should work…

318= horsepower on a 8V71—- You have a ddec 8 V 92. differant technology. What ever you do don’t let them put 24 V to you ddec(ecm) big $$$$ there. sorry to confuse you. Yours is prob 500 hp. I don’t think 318/8V71 was put in a coach after 1982. Go online to Detroit Diesel and you can down load tech manual. Or prevostcar.com and get general elect diagram. Put in your year prob a P (last letter in your serial number) and last 4 digits. Example P-6553. I do hope this helps. you to find your way.

    Hi guys,

Let me correct some of the information, I did not send the Good Sam’s driver away. The driver came out with the full knowledge it was a 24 volt system and he did in fact jump the coach. When the engine would not turn he checked a couple other things. After which he did not think it was not a battery issue. The next thing he did was push the toggle switch up and then push the button that is used to start the engine from the rear. There was no joy so he took the front off the big grey box above the engine where we both saw that the starter relay was almost black. After taking a wire he jump the relay on it’s left and right side, he determined the relay was shot and believed that it was the starter that blew the relay. And that’s where we are today.

When the above guy left he sent over a diesel mechanic to replace the relay and take off the starter which he did. The starter is now in a shop being rebuilt. It should be done sometime tomorrow or Monday. I’ve already said to my wife, “what do I do if when they finish I turned the key and it still doesn’t start”? My guess is to have them take the batteries out and check each of them.

As I said earlier I called Jim Lane and he talked to the mechanic and Jim seemed to feel the guy had the right idea and what he was doing made sense. Jim wasn’t there and was just trying to help a guy in need, me! But that was better for me than just taking a wing and a prayer knowing nothin from nothin. All I’m trying to do is get my bus running so I can get it up to Clark Power Service!

I don’t for a minute want you guys to think I’m not listening to you but you’ve got to understand I’m new to this and feel I have to depend on they guys here on the ground who genuinely seem to know what they’re doing. The guys down here don’t know Prevost but they do know what they call 318’s, which Jim told me is the cubic inches of the engine, the 24 volt systems and they seem eager and willing to help me as best as they can. They my be wrong in their appraisal of whats wrong, but I have no doubt they are well meaning and want to get me fixed up! I don’t know of anything else I can do and they’re almost certain its not the batteries.

I’m not at all happy this is happening to a coach that I’ve had for just two weeks today! But that’s the way it is and one way or the other I’m going to get this bus of main running and up to Clark Power Services in Knoxville, TN. My hope is when the starter is put back in it cranks right up and life is good. If it doesn’t, I’ll do the batterie check and see what that shows. I guess the worst case is to have it towed somewhere, I have no idea where but somewhere! I hope to look back at this as just part of the learning curve. Either that or break down in tears, and my wife hates it whan I cry! 🙂

    Well, Buddy,
it seems you have finally come to your senses.
However, after much though and pondering of the evidence, I must inform
you that before returning to work, with you being the (almost like boss), I
will require twice the money I was receiving.
This action is because Jon has tripled my dues, not once but twice,
requiring me to pay nine times what others are paying.
I will also require 6 months of paid vacation
with an unlimited expense account including the cost of fuel.
Double time and a half over 40 hours, Triple
time for weekends, clothing allowance, two coffee breaks, with you supplying
the coffee, supplied respiratory protection for when you eat those bean
burritos, supplied lunch, and paid time off to get a weekly manicure to get the
black diesel grime out from under my finger nails.

    Being the ultra-efficient
employee that I am, I expect Jeff to readily agree to these common, limited demands.

    Fred

    H. J., here is my two cents. When I first purchased my first and only coach I also encountered a start issue. Since the batteries were only six months old I initially did not think Batteries. I call a service provider and requested a jump start. That was around 9:00 AM in the morning. By 6:00 PM and several more calls, telling the phone person it was a 24 volt system, 3 field techs had shown up and gone away. The reason, they were not equipped to jump start a 24 volt system. True or not at that time I had no knowledge to say otherwise. The last tech that came wanted to do a load test of the batteries. All cables were disconnected, labeling each BEFORE removing them from their post. Turned out one battery had a bad cell. I called an Advance Auto, now I’d call NAPA with the PC Discount Card, we brought all four batteries to AA and they retested them. Same result. Bought four new batteries, since I did not want to go through this again, returned to the storage building, the tech installed them, and the engine cranked and started. By now it was almost 8:00 PM and too late to make a run.

It was really nice spring weather so we simply sat outside the storage building that day and enjoyed each other’s company. If I were you I would have started with the batteries before getting into removing a starter and getting it rebuilt. If you think the bolts were actually installed with an air wrench, you had best look closely at the tabs on the starter housing through which the bolts pass. You just might have one or more cracks in the housing.

Did the repair shop perform any tests on the starter before taking it apart? I had an alternator on my generator stop generating while at Owl’s Head Museum several years ago. NAPA did not have a replacement and it would have been three days for delivery. I asked about any local repair shops. I was referred to: The Starter Shop, 101 Western Road in Warren Maine 207-273-2161, in case you find yourself up there with a similar problem. The problem was diagnosed and a total rebuild was complete before 8:00 AM the next morning. That is what I call customer service. The shop specialized in repair of marine starters, generators and alternators. If your engine is an 8V92, that motor has been in marine service since WWII.

I hope you have the problem solved but if not go back to a load test of all four batteries and each isolated from the other three.

Went to coach today and air’d it-up. Shut the engine off and left the key in the on position. Heard no air leaking at air dryer, within driver side rear wheel well (raised fender skirt) and front airbags. I sprayed all visable fittings in these areas. However, I was unable to see any air line fittings to front airbags. I had the wheels turned. I may have been looking in the wrong place, though (towards the top, not the bottem of the bags).

    Tom and Jon,

Yesterday I was able to run all day with no alerts thanks to your suggestion that I set the pressure alert up from 20% to 25%. Made all the difference!

    Thanks for being here,

    Doug

Brake air and aux (suspension air) are completely separate. They tweaked something wrong. Do not drive as they suggested.

Diane, I use a Thetford to conventional hose adapter, which will allow you to use the 90 degree to connect to the Rhino.

    Fred,

You are stretching out too far with the mop. It will hurt your back. Keep the working head closer to you. That will allow greater down force and thus a cleaner job! I too don’t perceive any soap bubbles. Must be using a bubbleless chemical cleaner.

    OK, now back to work.
