Tom: I think there was a bigger discount than cash, but not as good as Love’s. I don’t recall Pilot/FJ as being “green”.

I’ve been keeping up with your issue and I feel for you in having this problem. Especially on the road.

And, as I usually say, “my two cents worth”.

I’ve had no experience with a radiator problem with a Prevost, but have had radiator issue experience a few times in the past with my vehicles and others that I have pulled wrenches on.

In my opinion the quality of a recored radiator is entirely dependent on the facility that did the job. I have had very good experience with recored units having had no problems. However, I have knowledge of one or two that had problems due to poor workmanship. If I had you problem, I would recore the radiator, but would have to be absolutely certain that the shop doing it was top shelf and experienced with this type of radiator.

It is not uncommon to see “oil canning” on an XL. Many times polishing the stainless is blamed, but while it may be possible for that to contribute, it may not be solely related to that.

Metal expands as it heats. It contracts when it is cool. With that in mind, consider that the skin, especially when getting heated in the sun is expanding, but the frame structure may not be expanding as fast so between lines of rivets that expansion in the metal has to go somewhere, and usually it takes the form of distorting and buckling. Sitting in an XL when it goes from cold, to getting heated by the sun you are going to hear noises, some especially loud as that skin expansion “oil cans”.

I think the reason why this is not occurring on an XLII is because the adhesive bond on the panels at the frame structure has some give to it and as the skin expands the adhesive is stretching or shrinking depending on if it is heating or cooling.

I was told in temperature extremes, such as in the desert at the start of day the coach is at near freezing temps, and then as the sun works its magic the skin is getting very hot that the length of the coach can expand by as much as 1/2″. Converters have to adjust their interior designs to accomodate this because while the exterior is expanding and shrinking the interior at a more constant temperature is remaining dimensionally constant.

I recently published an article in the GMC Motorhomes International magazine about the many benefits of LiFePO4 batteries for use in Motorhomes when properly installed. It is in the Fall2019 edition on pages 24-25. From their web site – GMCMI.ORG – you can also download the slides from an hour and a half presentation on this subject. I titled the article and slide presentation “A heart/lung transplant for your GMC” for a reason (grin).

while size, weight and long life are often cited as benefits, the really important benefit for us is that LiFePO4 batteries operate at a higher voltage than lead acid batteries. Li batteries operate at a higher voltage over 85% of their discharge capacity than a led acid battery has even when fully charged. More volts means more watts to do useful work for us. And While led acid batteries drop voltage and wattage the minute you start to use them, and drop voltage and wattage even faster when you use them hard (think powering inverters) in motorhome use a Li battery bank voltage/wattage will be closer to flat throughout its discharge cycle. That means that in motorhome use you will get nearly three times the wattage out of the Li bank than you can get from a lead acid battery bank. Hence it really takes closer to three time the lead acid battery bank rated capacity to equal the Li battery bank. As a result, the Li battery bank is not nearly as expensive on initial purchase as you might think. And, it is way cheaper over time.

In Prevost conversion applications with residential appliances this difference really adds up. With Li batteries all the appliances will run longer and happier so you will need to recharge less often to stay comfortable. Li batteries also recharge up to six times faster than lead acid, so solar starts to make a lot of sense. This faster recharge will work your alternator a lot harder so be careful there.

If you use the proper size (larger than you would think) and type of wire in your implementation (only use marine grade multi-strand wire) I think you will find the many Li benefits greatly outweighs the small additional investment. You really will think you have given your coach a heart/lung transplant!

It is not uncommon to have new tire inventory that is one or two years old.

What is important to consider is anecdotal evidence suggests replacing tires after they have been in use after 5 to 7 years, the length of time being your confidence in the tires. After that age we seem to have a greater incidence of tire failures. We do not have actual statistics nor do we have any history on failed tires.

But one critical factor is regardless of how long a tire has been in use, Michelin will not stand behind it after 10 years from its date code, so if you end up with a 5 year date code on a newly installed tire, you are on your own after 5 years of use.

Michelin now honors their warranty based on tread depth and the 10 year rule.

Just for the hell of it I would call or write Challenge Manufacturing which is very close, and ask them if they would permit dry camping on their property or on adjacent property. There is a lot of empty vacant space where factory buildings once stood.

My 01 Liberty also had the RO going to the holding tank and was constantly using water, but not anywhere near the volume discussed here. In the garage where it’s quiet I could actually here the water running into the holding tank. I couldn’t figure out why the pump would cycle often with no water being used and the RO was the culprit. All you can do is turn off the pump.
