  • Water transfer

Posted by Chuck on January 6, 2020 at 8:52 am

Strangest thing: filled fresh water tank, emptied holding tank and left on trip. Noticed a leak at the water pump area and it was dripping out of a drain that appears to have had a cap on it at one time. At the same time the pump shut down and the alarm set. OK no water in the coach and what occurred was that all the water from fresh tank was transferring to the black or grey tank? Fresh tank emptied.

Arrived at camp site and hooked water to fill and all well but it happened again overnight?

    Any suggestions?

    OOPS!, Disregard.

Chuck, the laws of physics dictate that the only way ALL the fresh water can be transferred into the holding tank is if something mechanical such as the water pump is doing the work. There is no direct connection between the two, and the only way for water to migrate from the fresh water tank to the holding tank is if something is running, such as a sink, the toilet, or any fixture that has a fresh water supply and a drain.

If your pump is not cycling it cannot happen because there is nothing in the coach that can lift fresh water from a low volume in the water tank, to a high volume in the holding tank. Water will not flow uphill by itself.

Make sure your pump switch is turned off and see if the problem persists. If it does hurry to the patent office and get a patent on whatever is causing the problem.

Jon: If the relay in the rose petal dispenser on his Liberty went bad, could that cause the water to move from the fresh water tank to holding tank?

I think when the rose petals start to dry up there is an automatic watering system to revive them. Can’t be without viable petals in the system. Something might start to stink!

Thanks Jon and Dick, your comment is interesting.

Doug, I will take your comment under advisement

    Chuck,

If you don’t easily notice the leaker you may have to turn off all your isolation valves & turn on one item at a time until the culprit shows up. I.E. kitchen sink, then toilet, then shower, etc. We have a shower valve that leaks. To prolong the inevitable I installed a shut off valve in the shower hose to stop the leak. I suppose if ever we part with this coach that little $5 shut off valve will still be my fix.

Like your toad by the way

My 98 Royale has a valve for flushing the Black tank. If the valve is open it will do the same thing yours did. If the Black tank doesn’t have enough capacity it will make a mess inside the bus.

Liberty does not have a means to flush the holding tank. Having a direct connection from a fresh water source to a holding tank for flushing is about the most gross violation of good plumbing standards I can think of due to the potential for back flow.

Yep. Unless you have a backflow preventer with an air gap. Check valve will not suffice.

After thinking more about this problem, I don’t think the Liberty exclusive rose petal dispenser is the cause.

    Questions for Chuck …

    1. Did you have the fresh water pump on when this happened?

    2. Do you have the valves open in the water bay that allows the DD engine coolant to flow through the water heater and heat the water?

    3. Does it look like a previous owner or tech might have modified the plumbing system?

    4. The water heater has a high pressure/high temp release valve, it’s in the side of the water heater near the top. The valve’s outlet should be connected to a pipe or hose that discharged under the coach through the floor of the water bay. Is that still the case? Or is the hose directed somewhere else?

If you can answer these questions, it will help us give you some ideas.

Dick, Explain how what you are questioning relative to a coolant heated HW tank and its coolant valves and temperature pressure relief valve have anything to do with transferring fresh water to the holding tank?

reverse osmosis system? My ro system waste water used to be plumbed into holding tank.

My 01 Liberty also had the RO going to the holding tank and was constantly using water, but not anywhere near the volume discussed here. In the garage where it’s quiet I could actually here the water running into the holding tank. I couldn’t figure out why the pump would cycle often with no water being used and the RO was the culprit. All you can do is turn off the pump.

There is approximately a 5 to one ratio for RO water. So unless there is something very wrong and the system is passing water continuously, the amount of water used and delivered to the holding tank is 5 times the amount of RO water used for coffee or drank, plus used for ice cubes. I do not know of any other use of RO in a Liberty.

The RO has a small accumulator tank, maybe a gallon in size and once that is satisfied no water will pass through the RO system.

    Sure Jon.

    1. The over pressure/over temp protection valve on the water heater might be bad and tossing water out the discharge. While highly unlikely, a previous owner might have plumbed the discharge into a waste line and into the holding tank. As the coach goes down the road with the water pump on as the DD heats the water heater tank the bad valve will release and the pump will slowly move the water from the fresh water tank to the holding tank.

    2. A faucet in the coach might be leaking a touch. If the DD is heating the water in the water heater and the water pump is on, as the water in the water heater gets hot it expands and is pushed out the slightly leaking faucet with the help of the water pump. Out the faucet, down the drain and into the holding tank.
