Anybody have any thoughts on this question??

Thanks’ Richard! That’s what I thought I heard, Is that a Detroit thing or all Diesels ??
-
The theory is that idling does not get the combustion chamber hot enough to do a clean burn, the unburned diesel washes oil off the cylinder wall, therefore increasing wear in the bore.
That’s the reasoning. I have never seen it quantified.

Thanks everyone for the response…like you mentioned Mike I do want to keep it simple…and yes I do have the LIFELINE 12V AGMs (6) 210ah each. I was looking to keep the 12/24V configuration keeping the bank at 6 batteries (if possible). I do know that shore power and generator operation does not effect the engine battery bank. They are only charged by the 50DN, but the alternator does charge the house battery bank.
Jerry I will read your series today for more insight.

After years of shopping, we finally settled on a 2000 Country Coach for some of your same concerns; primarily pre-EGR and no slides. While overall condition was important, we didn’t mind spending money after the purchase on deferred maintenance and upgrades. Floor plan and bones were our primary concern. We’re 2 years in and slowly making improvements.
I recently called a service provider and was quoted $5,000 for an “annual maintenance” service. Best of my recollection, that was servicing the engine and transmission, HVAC filters, Aqua Hot (or Webasto in our case) and cleaning all holding tanks. I’m sure there are people who love the convenience, but that is far more than we spend. Our truck shop services the engine and transmission as well as tires, brakes, and shocks. It’s not white glove service, but they understand all the parts and I trust their work. The same service provider shop also quoted $12,000 for 8 new Michelins which my truck shop can do (did do) for 1/2 that. Note that we have 315s not 365s. As far as filters and cleaning tanks, we do that ourselves. We have also learned to fix little things as needed like water pumps and solenoids.
We have a few necessary repairs coming (Webasto, bushings, glass dash to Silver Leaf) that will be expensive and are beyond our ability to do ourselves. Then there will be interior updates. Everything inside is original and dated, but still works (except the dash). Could we have spent $30-50,000 all at once on it? Certainly, but I prefer researching each issue and making an informed decision over time. This forum has been a life saver from the years of shopping to the maintenance and repairs!!
As with homes and cars, costs vary greatly depending on how handy you are and individual service providers. We snowbird in a large RV park in FL and talk to a lot of Class A owners who spent substantially more on their purchase and still spend a lot more money and time on repairs than we do not to mention time in the shop. I don’t regret buying this old bus at all.

My Liberty has one too. Its either a Prevost or Detroit part? I doubt its a converter part.
-
Amazing on that Porsche it has fairly large steel pipes under car all filled with coolant that all fills on fill up
-
Very similar experience with two converters and one reseller. The latter clipped us for $10,000 which we were unable to recover. Leaves a very bad taste in your mouth. Mike

Have you called Rudy?

Thanks, you are correct. The feed to the DC panel is dual 2/0 cables (my old system was indeed dual Lifeline banks and dual chargers)
The smaller starter-solenoid top-right is the Gen battery boost. Going to connect the Alt feed, boost cable, and DC-DC input together so the Alternator sees 12V.
Thanks!

P. S. There was a “bad batch” of five way norgrens a few years ago… Wonder if you (like me) got one of those and it failed….
I have also had (only) one 3 way fail similarly far too soon and with no evidence of contamination etc -
Thanks to you both. I will have to figure out how to get something 3D printed for visit some scrap yards!
Followup question Art (or anyone). The small piece that is actually attached to the window frame is in a piece of metal that can slightly slide from side to side. The piece is very loose and it can’t be screwed in by turning it. That metal plate is also VERY loose and is coming away from the frame a little which the other windows do not. Do you know how to access whatever the small tab is attached to and re-secure that part of the fixture? If so, I could disconnect an arm on an unused window and swap the 2.
Thanks again.

Prevost calls for my 50DN to be set to charge at 27.7. My coach is a single alternator coach so my Li batteries see that charge voltage when driving.
However, Unlike most owners, if we are traveling, when we stop for the evening at a rest area my generator is running as soon as the engine is off, and my inverters are powered, meaning they are charging the Li batteries at 28.6 volts.
So if charging at a lower voltage when driving is not ideal, my habit of running the generator until bed time, or all night if necessary my Li batteries are always getting a full charge.

Art, i think you worry too much.
