Set Magnum 2812 inverters for Lithum
Posted by Art on December 9, 2024 at 9:12 pmCharged up all 4 8D 280 Amp hours batteries separately to 100 percent and then wired in parallel and balance for 24 hours then today ran Aqua Hot heaters and all lights, Jonthan Fine texted me his cheat sheet on setting magnums, Don Beard is helping me set up inverters also, So far batteries are holding

After talking to Don he says I have to change my charging thoughts, AGM and lead acid batteries when they got to 95 percent 12.4v the batteries are almost dead and they need generator when dry camping, He say’s Lithium batteries at 50 percent they still have 13.1v, When batteries showed up last week they said Lithium has to be shipped with 30 to 50 percent, they were all 50percent and 13.1v, I’m use to keeping up in the 90 percent after a night of inverting refrigerator and other things the next morning batteries 95 percent 12.5v need to charge, It will be interesting next trip to Rincon beach and see what happens ???

So far I’m impressed with the Lithium LifePO4 batteries, I took out 4 Lifeline 8D batteries total of 1050 amp hr batteries, I installed 1120 amp hr of LifePO4 8D size batteries, After charging and installing I’ve had chargers off and lights on and twice I’ve run the Aqua Hot and all heaters for 2 plus hours each time and tested bay heater on Aqua Hot and it’s been 4 days since charged and batteries started out 99 percent and 14.3 and today after running Aqua Hot for second time total of at least 4 plus hours and lights batteries are on Victron 93 percent at 13.4v wow amazing No charger at all yet.

I told you Art. LiTime Lithium is the way to go.

So everything I read is to not leave batteries full when not in use, At home under the pole barn don’t leave chargers on They recommend 50 percent while sitting, We have a trip planned in Febuary so I will keep the Magnums charger buttons off, I’m having a hard time getting my head wrapped around this. I read this in a couple spots! (Keeping Lithium ion batteries on charge continuously will damage the batteries and some chargers will attempt to shut down to charge, but just at 100 percent will cause internal damage to the batteries) (If your RV Lithium LiFePO4 batteries are not holding their charge while stored, it’s likely due to a combination of factors including not storing them at the optimal charge level (around 50-80%), potential parasitic loads drawing power even when not in use, extreme temperatures during storage, or a failing battery management system (BMS); even though LiFePO4 batteries have a low self-discharge rate, they will still gradually lose charge over time if not properly maintained). It sounds a little complicated

Lots of what you see/read about charging Li batteries pertains to Li chemistry other than LiFePO4 batteries. Those can and should be fully charged to allow the BMS to properly balance the cells. They also can be fully discharged in use as the BMS will shut the battery down before it is fully discharged. Other Li chemistry battery may behave differently. Follow the battery manufacturer recommendations.

Right out of the book It says store at 50 percent charge. Refrigerator has been running all day and every light and ran Aqua Hot again Victron says 86 percent 13.2v not bad

I guess I have been screwing up. I installed my Relion LiFeP04 batteries and after verifying the bus alternator voltage regulator setting was Ok as well as the inverter charge voltage I did nothing.
I do not monitor the state of charge. I do always have it plugged in with inverters powered except when driving, and I do NOTHING. My only effort with my Li batteries is to make sure if temps are going to drop that the heating system in their enclosure is functioning.
If I had to do all that has been posted about monitoring the SOC I w9ould have stayed with AGM. The less I have to worry about on the bus the happier I am.

I do agree with that Jon, But if I have to push the charger button off on inverters when parked at home under barn, I can do that If it extends life of batteries I can do that. If these batteries can keep doing this I can go extra mile, after test last night. At 11:15PM last night before bed went out to bus, Refrigerator has been running 13 hours and have ran Aqua Hot 3 times and all heaters for 2 hours each time, every light in bus on,Have not charged at all since installed on Sunday here is 2 pics from Victron BMV 1st pic yesterday morning, 2nd 11:15 last night after turning refer and Aqua Hot off volts came up.

Art, just use it like you did with your AGM’s. The BMS will take care of everything for you. You like to Tinker so i guess you are just going to do what you got to do.

I have Outback inverters cabled together to make 8000 watts available from the batteries. I will run a variety of loads such as the refrigerator and outlets, TVs, coffee maker, etc, but my practice is if I spend a night without shore power I run the generator until I go to bed and I never run A/Cs from my inverter.
My Outbacks have a “silent mode” in which they charge the Li batteries (and AGM) and then stop charging until battery voltage drops to around 24.4 or 24.5. At that point they resume charging until fully charged meaning they show about 26.5 or thereabouts, and then go back to silent mode.
Based on my battery performance curves my Li as currently used are projected to be capable of 14,000 charging cycles. So far so good, especially since I do nothing with them.

Jonthan Fine adjusted his DN50 up 14.2v to charge Lithium Batteries, Don did nothing with his DN50, The Lithium batteries want to be charged at 14.2 to 14.6 If charged at 13.8 that DN50 charges at ,the Lithiums won’t charge all the way up to 100 percent I would’t think that would hurt anything? My DN50 12v is only for 12v house, it has a separate 24v alternator for chassis.

Prevost calls for my 50DN to be set to charge at 27.7. My coach is a single alternator coach so my Li batteries see that charge voltage when driving.
However, Unlike most owners, if we are traveling, when we stop for the evening at a rest area my generator is running as soon as the engine is off, and my inverters are powered, meaning they are charging the Li batteries at 28.6 volts.
So if charging at a lower voltage when driving is not ideal, my habit of running the generator until bed time, or all night if necessary my Li batteries are always getting a full charge.
