T&C, don’t let a jake or retarder be a deciding factor in looking for the right bus. While the retarder is more effective it also has a downside. A Jake will work quite well with the right gear selection. I really think there are (though I don’t know for sure) are more busses out there with a Jake than a retarder, but it would not be a factor for me in choosing any particular bus. FWIW Geo.

Just recently we have done some down shifting in the mountains of California and New Mexico. I appreciate the gear and retarder suggestions. That helps a lot.

I guess I don’t understand how the retarder works though. I thought it just caused you to downshift and that if you had done so manually it wasn’t doing anything. Enlighten me?

Need to hire me a couple hands but then wouldn’t have any money let over to fire up the coach. Only have a 100 acres here and don’t know how Peter does it with a gazillion acres up there in God’s Country. Life ain’t fair for iggiots like me. Think I’ll head out and tear something else up. Got a couple pieces of equipment still straight and running and plenty of daylight left.

As a former fabricator of metal goods I can say there is no way to build the small quantities this market would be buying and expect to make any money unless the proces were very high. There are different generators in use, some are sideways and some are installed lengthwise and a company trying to reach the market would have to spend a lot of money it likely will never recover.

Some small shop with access to the right machines and tools could probably make one in a day with about $100 in materials as long as it had the bus and generator sitting right there so the builder could get the dimensions. If it needed air bags and full extension double the hours and material cost at the very least.

I would want to be very specific with the dealer and if you are not comfortable pressing them hard for information have Jeff do it.

His observation about the EGR makes a lot of sense unless there are other clues such as a rough running engine or coolant in the oil. The EGR heat exchanger could very well do what you describe and pass coolant through the engine via the intake manifold. I would want to know how that was ruled out as a cause.

But getting down to the nitty gritty, which is cost, detroit needs to do a better job of giving you numbers. An inframe repair shouild easily be quoted, starting with the most likely problem and going from there. A new or reman is going to be expensive and if the issue is external the parts that are creating the problem are likely going back on so there is a risk if there is not a guaranteed test of the egr intercooler for example.

“while clinging to a ladder” is a recipe for damage and injury on almost any job except maybe changing a light bulb.

It’s done now, that’s great; I think a platform, maybe a sheet of plywood on barrels, would have been more comfortable.

could take the one You have now to the glass shop and see if they could duplicate it. My local glass shop could ;they have all types of extrusions. Might look for a place that does comercial glass. Also Dale AKA songman here knows where there are some prevost being salvaged that could have that another window. Bob

Live aboard and we usually move once per week for work. We have averaged right at 15,000 miles a year in the bus for the last seven years. We have had no house for nearly 13 years but we do have a barn now, Yay!

What about the granddaddy of bus convertors, Custom Coach, in Columbus, Ohio; now part of Farber Custom Coach, I think. Or did they never do Prevost?

He looks around, the music is load and he figures he’ll just let one rip and time it to the loud drums and no one will hear. He let er rip and ahhhhh so much better. He looks around, everyone was looking at him and he realizes he has his head phones on!

    Tim & Cindy,

Welcome aboard. The search for the right bus can be an intersting time. Read as much of the forum post as you can, that will give you a good start on what you need to know.

As far as this comment ” You should take a very serious look at Tom and Nancys coach. He doesn’t like to use his position with the Forum as an advantage and flaunt his coach on the Forum. Its likely in your age/price range, available, and for sale so Tom can buy another coach.”

Forget it, my wife says Nancy promised we had right of first refusual on Tom’s current coach when he gets his next “last coach”

If at all posible come to the rally no rally at Bella Terra, there will be a lot of coaches to look at and a chance to get a ton of information in a short period of time.

Just as Jon and Peter said rotate the banjo clamp to clear the shock. Nothing to be concerned about in the least.

I can assure you the Koni is mounted correctly. They can only be installed one way. Koni’s being a little

wider/thicker caused the increased clearance needed.

Oh by the way you’ll love your Koni’s ….worth the money.
