Five family members killed in RV accident.

This was a Class 7 or 8 “truck conversion” pulling a large (three HD axles) race trailer. You’ll read that probably the driver shouldn’t have been driving. But nonetheless the deaths (5) and the injured (13) are overwhelming. If you go full screen on the video it become apparent the “house” was scraped off the deck/floor on the chassis of the truck.
Things happen pretty quickly … even at 63 or 64mph like I normally travel.

This is a pepperball and hard nonlethal plastic ball launch that might be of some interest to those who are not into guns.
It is not considered a gun but it is a weapon. Hope you like the video

I have a very good friend who owns a motorhome built by Winnebago. About 2 years ago he told me that while under the rear end of it he noticed an area at the left rear corner where the body was attached to the frame some wear at the attach point. He took it to an RV service facility and upon inspection they told him not to worry about it, that it was just normal wear at the attach point and that it should pose no problem. He asked me what I thought. I told him that I didn’t think that any wear pattern at a body attach point should be considered “normal” and offered to take a look.
He brought it to my shop where I do maintenance on and restorations of vintage airplanes and I took a look. What I found was that the left rearmost body mounting bracket that had been welded to the frame had broken free from the frame and the floor of the body, which had been supported by the bracket 1 and1/2 inches above the frame, had dropped down and was now resting on the frame. The wear that he had observed was on the floor crossmember where it was now in contact with the frame now unattached and able to move around somewhat.
To correct the problem I jacked the body up to restore the original frame to body clearance and put in a 1 foot piece of solid 1 and 1/2 inch square steel bar stock for the body crossmember to rest on and welded it and the original mounting bracket securely to the frame. I don’t think that there will be a reoccurring problem here again.
After completing the repair I took a look at the rest of the body/frame attach points on both sides from front to rear. What I found was that the brackets had been welded with a wire welder (MIG machine) and that there was an obvious difference in the quality of the welds between the left and right side of the coach. Obviously done by two different people with different skill levels which I would attribute to normal assembly line production. What really bothered me was that there couldn’t have been much of an inspection in the interest of quality control. I took some photos and gave them to my buddy and suggested that he give them to Winnebago for their consideration and to possibly give them a heads up on what had gotten past their QC inspectors. I think that he was just glad to get it repaired and didn’t follow up with reporting to Winnebago what had been found.
I have since often wondered how many Winnebago manufactured motorhomes are out there that this same person welded the body attach brackets on. Maybe that coach in the photos is one of them.

We’ve driven I-80 from SLC to Cheyenne then east to I-88, then north on I-88 to I-39, and into Wisconsin. Great scenery in Wyoming. Interesting places to stop and visit including Laramie and Cheyenne. Lots more interesting places in Nebraska and Iowa including the World’s Largest Truck Stop on I-80.
I drove I-70 through Colorado 30 years ago. IMHO trip is jaw dropping. Unless I was told by someone who drove it recently, I would take the 45′ Prevost and toad on the same trip today without reservations. Look at the map and you’ll see lots of interesting side trips.
Once you get to Denver consider dropping down to Colorado Springs and come back north if you have time. More interesting things to see and do.

Constant problems at campgrounds with poor power and breakers. They never do any maintenance on the power pedestals and the constant off/on of the breakers causes them to fail. It’s always in the heat of the summer when power issues surface.

None of us will have a problem stopping at 70 or 75.
But at that speed and distance in excess of 450 feet, the guy in the car ahead that can stop in somewhere between 140 and 180 feet might have a problem.

Have no idea , Bus Kote is supposed to be a NASA spinoff and is used on a lot of school buses. Supposed to have micro ceramic beads that create a barrier , Is it just hype ? They also sell extra beads to add for more protection. I used their primer for 2 coats , product for 2 coats and sealer for 2 coats. Amazed at the difference it made in the coach…

Jeff put double Southco latches on mine in 2016 and they are still doing great. Doors are loaded heavy and the top drawer stays full of can drinks and a couple heavy bottles. Freezer is stocked. Never had any problem. My Grandson opened it last week and asked Me why it was so hard to open. We have one just like it in the house just a larger model of course.

Some of you may have followed my five part article on Li battery substitution in Bus Conversion magazine. I am working on a follow up using quite a different approach for 12vdc house batteries by swapping out only half the existing lead acid house batteries and adding an equal number of Li batteries to create two different house battery banks separated by a large amp combiner. A separate inverter/charger is attached to each house battery bank. High amp draw loads (refer, appliances, etc.) are taken from the Li side and low amp draws (LED lights, flat screen TVs, computer charging, etc.) are taken from the Lead Acid side. The large amp combiner isolates these two when no charge current is present. When a charge current is present the combiner isolates the two house banks so the risk of one bank discharging the other is minimised.
The existing 12vdc alternator can be used while driving as when the BMSs in the Li house battery bank shuts off charge to those batteries the alternator output is absorbed by the lead acid batteries so there is no voltage spike. The inverter/chargers handle charging via shore power or gen power. This may result in slightly over charging the lead acid bank when in float but that will do little if any harm. Two separate MPPT solar chargers are used to keep both banks up when in appropriate sunlight. When the Li batteries reach full charge all the charge current from both MPPT controllers is directed to the lead acid bank so it may eventually become fully charged as well with enough time/sunlight.
While you only achieve half the weight savings, you do so with just half the investment and you don’t need a bunch of new electronics to handle the differences between the Li and lead acid battery characteristics – at least on paper and in design consultation with one of the leading Li drop in replacement battery makers. We will see how things play out in practice.
This approach is only appropriate for coaches with totally separated house and chassis battery banks as you are only dealing with the 12vdc house side only and not impacting the 24vdc chassis side. I will keep you posted as this goes forward.

Jeff and Brenda, it sounds like the gen fuel shutoff valve or gen fuel pump may have a bad connection or is failing intermittently.
Also, when was the last time the gen fuel filter(s) were changed? -
