Suggestions on Salt Lake to Denver
Looking to go from Salt Lake to Denver. I thought somewhere I read that I-70 was not bus friendly. Also is Rte 6 reasonable down to I-70? Trying to decide on how I will head back east. Will be in West Yellowstone any suggestions on West Yellowstone to Spearfish and on to I-90. Any help appreciated. Don’t want to get on some small inappropriate roads. Thanks.

Taking 15 south to 70 east will take you alot longer because of terrain.
SLC get on 80 east to Cheyenne pickup 25 south to DEN. You run above I70. Wide open interstate all the way.

We’ve driven I-80 from SLC to Cheyenne then east to I-88, then north on I-88 to I-39, and into Wisconsin. Great scenery in Wyoming. Interesting places to stop and visit including Laramie and Cheyenne. Lots more interesting places in Nebraska and Iowa including the World’s Largest Truck Stop on I-80.
I drove I-70 through Colorado 30 years ago. IMHO trip is jaw dropping. Unless I was told by someone who drove it recently, I would take the 45′ Prevost and toad on the same trip today without reservations. Look at the map and you’ll see lots of interesting side trips.
Once you get to Denver consider dropping down to Colorado Springs and come back north if you have time. More interesting things to see and do.

Chris as far as highway 6 its been 35 years since we trucked it but its a 2 lane thru Indian res that you get south of Provo.
Nothing to be scared of just pay attention, nothing out there. When you get 70 east out of Green River beautiful but you pay for it in time.
We don’t do well over 6000 feet altitude and 70 goes over 10,000 feet. Going 70 instead of 80 will be 4 hours longer but pretty.
All depends what you want to do.

We left West Yellowstone and went north on 191 thru big sky to Bozeman then east on 90 to spearfish.

Just did Breckenridge to Nashville and drove I-70 alot of the way. The hills require you to slow down and use jake brake / trans retard and a lower gear, but for my first trip through the mountains in a coach, I think I did quite well.
General rule I have been told…….go down the hills only as fast as you go up the hills. Stick to that rule and all will be fine.
The scenery is breathtaking.

Thanks for the help. Now I have to decide whether to go north over to Bozeman and back through South Dakota or back 80. Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I-70 is a no go and only for the fearless (which I am not).

I-70 thru colorado mountains is NO trouble. 38 mph up the grades, 35 down the grades by “jake”. But unless C Dot has done some pavement work since March, the ROAD surface in general SUX!! We suggest steer clear

I 70 thru the Eisenhower tunnel ,East of Silverthorn, is so rutted that controlling the bus in the lane is downright scary. My son even commented about this driving his car. Makes it all the more interesting with cars and trucks passing you in the tunnel. We dont avoid travelling on I70 but certainly wish Colorado would do a better job .
