Snow is a dirty word down here. Of course it is easy to tell when it is wintertime up north. It seems we get the attention of a lot of Canadians that escape to come for a week or more and play golf. We can always tell them because they are the only ones wearing shorts in 30 degree weather!

Not that we haven’t had the extreme storm that hangs around for what seems like forever. Some times we get a storm that starts out with freezing rain and then turns to wet snow later at night. The one in January 2000 was forecast as up to 3″ of snow. That is no big deal as those storms usually melt off the deck by noon. Well this one turned the power off at 0200 hours. I went back to sleep after throwing on a couple more blankets. When we got up the next morning I looked out the bedroom window at the three heat pumps. Each had three inches of ice topped of with 21″ of snow, WET snow. We could hear large pine trees snapping like toothpics with their loads of ice and wet snow. We hav what are called “Lonleaf Pines” with 12″ – 16″ long needles. Of course as the pine trees fell they took out the utilities. This was one that did not melt by noon. It hung around for three weeks. We could not get off our one block because of the downed trees. Everyone on the block was very lucky as the pines that fell had not hit any of the houses.

That was a storm to remember.

    Ha, good one.

A side by side taste test might be interesting to people.

I fully expect when I get to FL next week Tom will have some of what he is spreading all bagged up and ready for me to put on my garden.

I contacted Bella Terra and suggested they waive the year restriction for Prevosts and here:s response:

Good morning, Tom! We actually have a 15-year restriction, and no, I don’t recall ever seeing a Prevost that didn’t meet our standards; but, we’re required to ask for a photo for all guests that fall either on the limit or exceed it to ensure no one is discriminated against. I’m sorry for any inconvenience it causes.

    Pat,

I live at TGO and could come and take a look at your peoblem. Not to much Liberty knowledge but can try to do some trouble shooting.

Let me know what site you are on and I will come over if you want some help.

    Richard,

The components we see are the ones we look at when chasing leaks, but I believe the less visible components are just as leak prone.

I believe the air to the rear goes through a distribution point that is out of sight around the corner from the chassis batteries. If I am not mistaken there is a protection valve and a regulator in that area and from that air goes to the belt tensioners and the transmission retarder if equipped. I believe it is also a Prevost approved connection point for the converter. In the past that has been a leak source on my coach.

I also have found the belt tensioner regulator to leak, as well as the valve.

There is no silver bullet for leak detection. The place to start is to make a device, either a bubbler or a pressure gauge device that allows you to disconnect an air line, pressurize the system supplied by the air line, and if no bubbles show or there is no pressure drop you know that system is OK. If it is not OK, then you have to move downstream in that system or line until you find the component or fitting that is leaking.

You can find a lot of the leaks the old fashioned way with soapy water, by listening, by listening with a stethoscope, or by using an ultrasonic leak detector, but what you are going to find there is no single way to detect all leaks and when you have exhausted the easy ways (such as spraying soapy water) you are eventually going to start using devices such as I described above.

My three mini bags for belt tensioning have given me the same problem. Not only do they deplete in 1 hour to three or more days, so does the aux air tank. Started by replacing the check valve. Then the regulator. Last trip out this week sat for three days until time to leave and all was still full. Called Prevost tech support, they suggested a NC 3 port Norgren might be sticking open. Replaced it and still have the same problem. After replacing the Norgren all aux system was drained in about 14 – 16 hours. Have sprayed everything and no bubbles.

    Any suggestions could help!

    Thanks in advance

    Richard

I hate to get everyone excited about polishing slack adjusters since the last few posts were from folks that do not have them on their coach.

That is a slack adjuster iinstalled on my 87 coach.

That is a larger view and barely visible in the background is a black brake chamber, which when the brakes are applied has a push rod that pushes against the slace adjuster, which in turn rotates a cam to apply the brakes.

Theres another view. It is oriented sideways, but you can see the principle. The slack adjuster as the name implies is a device that allows you to adjust the play in the brakes.

But that’s old school. Our later model coaches which have the Knorr-Bremse (Bendix) brakes have calipers that have a mechanism internally to adjust the brakes automatically.

The calipers now look like this, and the brake chamber is oriented differently so the brakes are a different animal.

However, as you can see from the photo of my brake calipers there is no reason why they can’t look clean and pretty.

Dan: I’ll take your oem’s at half price plus shipping…I won’t require a charitable donation.

I’ve had Koni’s on the front set mid-way for about 50,000 miles. They seemed slightly stiffer than oem but I prefer a soft ride…I don’t think I’ll ever get the bus to handle like my track car. The rf Koni had a catastrophic failure 10k miles ago (broken shaft) and was replaced with a Monroe I bought for $25. The lf Koni is still on…can’t tell the difference.

Let me know where I should send the check. I’m at 387 Lake Havasu Ave South, Lake Havasu City, Az 86403

    Diane,

That is the reason I wanted to know exactly what they were so I could keep mine polished. Bernie pointed out that I need to work on polishing my copper piping…. apparently, Jon’s is shinier than mine!

With a 20 year old coach, that took a purposeful 3 year approach to zero everything out, I’m still looking for leak free. Until then I level with blocks for long stays in one place (football season) or set it down on the stops if the site is actually level, or add air periodically during short stays.

The aux compressor is better starting the big noise maker, but, I ha be to watch the condensate produced.
