Even though we want to drive these huge vehicles, we still want them to get reasonable fuel mileage.
I was told on the new bus we’re having built that has the new Volvo engine, weighing 53,000 lbs. (wet), we should expect about 6.5-7 mpg. I like to drive on the slow side which is 55 mph in California and I’ll move up to about 60-62 mph if there is not ‘towing’ speed limit.
Our current tow vehicle weighs a little over 3,400 lbs. and I will continue to tow this vehicle with the new coach. It probably wont’ make a huge difference since it’s rather light.

on a xl you should be able to see between the bay door and the handle the locking pin. I have used a pick and pocket knife to slide the pin back so the door can open.

DKO,
My Vantare does not charge chassis batteries through the Inverters. It does have a dedicated 24v battery charger mounted in the battery compartment for the chassis batteries. That charger is plugged into an AC outlet next to it..It is an automatic charger. Don’t know about your vintage, but on mine, everything is powered by the Inverters.

Hi Tom, It was really nice meeting you and Nancy!
Dave and I really appreciate all that you do for us, and
everybody here on PC! We have used it all, fuel card tire discount NAPA card
and the Battery discount too. It costs a lot to run these big machines down the
road as you know so every discount counts! Dave had a wonderful concert in Clearwater and the tour has
been a blast. We’ve played to sold out audiences all over the country with many
more to come I’m sure. Of course, this would not be possible with out the XLII
mainly because Dave was fed up with airports and now he can travel in stile
like a Hall of Famer should! I hope we can see all of you down the road
sometime soon!Godspeed to us all.

He installed it when he did the engine swap so really nothing to compare it
to. I used a 12.7 muffler on mine so it maybe a little restrictive. I think the
stock muffler is about $1200 dollars compared to about $150 for the stainless Aero. That’s another motivator for me.
It’s also much lighter than the stock one. I know it’ll sound faster with the Aero, but I don’t want too much fast. I prefer
quite.Ken

Dean,
If you replace it, I’ll make you a deal on the parts, I have the same unit. There are replacements out there, so maybe someone will jump in here.

Looks like a Chevy!
Thanks for the info on the Vantare lighting

If you want real-world info about this type of battery, then talk to people who have been installing them… that would be people with yachts. There is a lot of great info to be found here:
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/search.php?searchid=5743597
On that forum, look for any posts from T1 Terry. He seams to really know what he’s talking about.
Also check out Technomadia.com for RVers who have been using them and reporting their findings.
I will be installing a huge bank of them in my vintage bus, but they are not a simple drop in replacement for existing coaches. You have to make sure your charging setup is optimized for it and that there are systems in place to cut off loads before the battery is fully discharged.
Read up on the cruisers forum to learn from real world users and ignore anyone that doesn’t have real world experience (that includes me) or has something to sell (bus converters who don’t use them). Listen from real world experience and if someone didn’t like their experiences, then listen real carefully. I find that most people who don’t like them either 1) don’t have any personal hands-on experience with them (and love quoting news stories that have to do with batteries that do not use the chemistry that are used in the batteries you are considering), or 2) did not fully research what’s necessary to properly impliment them and therefore ended up with a system that was inadvertently designed to make them fail. Have fun finding someone who implimented them properly and doesn’t like them… the only complaint I hear about is cost and lack of experienced people who can design a system for your needs without making you go bankrupt.
