Jon, all good points. I assume everyone understands with more power comes responsibilty, driving a modified Detroit with more power smoothly should result in better mpg. I experienced this with my Duramax, hotter tune, driven easily produced better mpg.

Heat is a concern I have, interestingly I have been doing a lot of reading on the Borg Warner non wastegate Turbo and manifolds that will drop EGT’s.

I suspect most of the Volvo heat is all in exhaust aftertreatment and EGR. No debate that the OEM’s starting building bigger engines to handle the heat and stress from EGR, DD15 DD16 etc etc.

Other than heat my biggest concern would be the Allison, but seems to be that the HD4000MH is rated for 650Hp and 1950 ft. lb Tq…hmm.

Anyways, my biggest goal is better mpg and then maybe slightly better power for pulling on hills.

I know few here will run the miles myself or Peter may do in a year, but I think payback on some engine mods can come quite quick.

Going to do a bunch more research before I start modding anything.

    Thanks Karl,

Good to hear that Zip Dee came through for you. It was indicated by several members that Zip Dee has known major problems for previous electric/air awnings. Makes me wonder if they really tested these units before putting them on the market.

Our new coach will have Zip Dee folding chairs….. they better work! :o)

    Paul,

The electrical systems aren’t much different than what I had on my 2008 Beaver traditional coach. There’s just more of if and bigger components. I have 2 inverters similiar to the one I had. I have 6 8D batteries and room for 8 compared to 4 golf cart batteries. I have 2 alternators and the 1 is huge compared to the one I had. I have a 17.5kw generator instead of a 10kw generator. They both have a similiar transfer switch. And it plugs into the same 50A shore outlet.

Okay, maybe it’s a bit more complex than I’m suggesting, but not so much so that it’s hard to get your arms around.

As said by others, older components selected by converters (regardless if they are still be in business) may be obsolete. In some cases the OEM has a new compatible component, in other cases you may have to replace more than the failed component. I have yet to hear anyone say they couldn’t overcome component obsolesence.

    Don’t be afraid,

On the back of led the location of pins is key to ficture fit. Also as cheap as they are(under $4) get a few and experiment. Watch and make sure you get dimmable. I had a few differant ones we tried in DKO bus until he found the ones he liked. Differant ones for differant areas. If it must have the M name on it go that way! For others if using E-bay I suggest a USA shipper as I had problems in shipping with China. Great to decide what you want to use. Side note:: I used to replace my landscape lights also.. sure last longer. Bob

I am thinking that if I drain all the water out of the air tank and there is sediment, sludge, or whatever else in there besides the water, would it have the effect of releasing that stuff into the system (stuff that had fallen to the bottom of the pool of water and, being underwater, not gone out with the air at the top of the tank). ???

Maybe I should just get a new tank?

    Thoughts would be much appreciated.

Mark – I ran across I-80 from Omaha and the road was great. In fact, other than some rough spots on I-76 in Denver, our whole trip from GA via KC and Wyoming to Breckenridge had good roads.

C-Bus – Pizza Thursday if you can make it at Jdub’s site.

    Barry,

If you’re talking R-12, you’ll have a hard time finding it, but not impossible. I have bought a number of 30 lb containers on Craigslist locally, you can’t ship it.

    Tom,

My impression of your dryer purge valve operation was that it is functioning as it should. The pressure on your coach I believe is independent of the dryer and is regulated at the compressor.

As to your question regarding the leaking Norgren, the end caps are unlikely to ever have pressure behind them unless air is leaking past the spool. Tightening the end cap will not solve the problem which is probably going to be cured with new spools or O rings for the existing spools. For what it is worth the 12 air port when pressurized maintains an open path between ports #1 and #2 by shifting the internal spool. That might be on a trivia quiz.

Yours has glow plugs? Mine does not. I have not seen them on a newer diesel for some time….maybe a special Liberty order thing?

Putting a finish on something is a real science and the factors to be considered are mind boggling. I continue to be amazed how well our factory finishes hold up given the difficulty in getting anything to properly adhere to both the aluminum and stainless steel. A conversion coat is typically a part of the process to prep a surface for finishing and that conversion coat (such as on steel) creates a crystaline structure on the surface to which the finish will adhere. Materials other than steel, such as aluminum or galvanized steel are real challenges.

Then there is the problem of the finish itself, almost all of which have properties that affect their ability to perform. Apply our coach finishes too thick and it can be expected to fail. Use the wrong finish for the application and it will fail. A two part epoxy finish is normally bulletproof, but it will chalk extensively if exposed to the sun. Apply the wrong material to the roof and I can easily envision poor adhesion, chalking running down the sides of the coach and never ending problems from the material being destroyed by the sun.

I have no answers as to what surface finish works best on the roof of our coaches, but I do know that allowing people to walk on the roof and permitting the use of pressure washers anywhere on the coach is a recipe for disaster. On those extrremely rare occasions when I feel compelled to clean my roof I use a ladder to stand on and a long handled mop so I am not on my roof, a situation reserved for only those instances when I absolutely must be up there.

After consulting my co-pilot we agreed, we aren’t in a hurry and we might as well take it easy. We are going up to I-64 to I-81.

    Thanks for the great input.
