My rivet tool looks similar to the one you pictured but is a Sunex that I have had for a long time. The larger manual tools work fine but there are over 100 rivets to install. A note on drilling them out: use cutting/tapping oil and drill them slowly. Buy plenty of drill bits so you can always have a sharp one. Stainless will work harden if your drill is not cutting.

Since there is a discussion on refrigerators, we have a 19 year old Jen Air side by side, it is still getting the job done, but who knows when it will give up. We want to schedules the replacement instead of it. Is there any recommendation on which brand to go with.

Lots of good advice here.

But keep in mind that most if not all the advice is likely based on how the converter originally engineered, designed, and wired the coach. A previous owner or over zealous repair guy coulda tried to outsmart the original converter’s thinking and wired something in special that creates another layer of complexity.

I don’t know how to find well intentioned, but short-sighted modifications … other than to make your shut-offs and then make sure what you thought was turned off actually is turned off.

My bus is an 05 XL-II, but I have updated the headlights, so I ordered NS-4307L for the low beam and NS-4307H for the high beam.

One issue with auto gen start is that voltage is NOT a good measure of state of charge unless the batteries have been at rest – neither charging or discharging – for several hours. Lead acid batteries whether called flooded, sealed, AGM or gel all drop voltage the minute you start using them and drop voltage much more rapidly the harder you use them. For example, turn on the microwave and watch how quickly measured voltage drops. It is not uncommon to see far less than 12vdc. Run another high draw appliance (like an induction cooktop) at the same time and the measured voltage may drop below 11vdc.

A so called 12vdc battery fully charged at rest reads 12.6vdc. When it reads 12vdc at rest it is already 50% discharged. So, an auto gen start set to 10.5 volts May be correct if the battery bank is used hard all the time, it is way too low if the battery bank is lightly used like the case reported above.

A far more accurate way to measure battery state of charge is to install a shunt based battery monitor that directly measures amps going in and amps going out. If the battery manufacturer properly rated the battery capacity (total number of amp hours available), then you can directly read amp hours remaining IF the amp draw averages the fixed rate of draw the manufacturer assumed when rating the battery in the first place. Rating is usually done at an assumed amp draw of 20 amps per hour.

Confused yet? Given the amp draw in a Prevost is almost never 20 amps per hour, there is no surprise the manufacturers had to do a lot of head scratching to come up with these seemingly low auto gen start voltages that are usually set around 10 to 11.5 volts.

LiFePO4 batteries read about 13.6vdc when fully charged and stay reading more than 12.6vdc through 85% of their capacity. So, while called drop in replacements for lead acid batteries, that does not apply to auto gen start settings.

If he had gotten a better running start he might have been able to get all the way through, so it must be the city’s fault because in addition to the height being listed they should have posted the best speed to make it through if you were taller than the listed height.

Tom sells both. From my perspective either Lifeline or Relion are the best choices based on overwhelming feedback.

Neither are cheap. If you are looking for cheap go to lead acid and carry a supply of distilled water to keep them topped off. If you want AGM there are cheap alternatives to Lifeline, but feedback has almost been universally poor.

I have done a lot of research and based on how I use my coach AGM makes the most sense, but if I did a lot more dry camping than I do now it would be no contest. I would go with Li because they would do a lot better than AGM. But right now I could get along just fine with only half of my AGM batteries so the economics become the deciding factor.

You have to look very hard at how you use your batteries, if you can reduce the number while still retaining the same performance, if getting weight off your front axle is important, and if you will still own your coach in 10 years.

For some the decision is a no brainer. For the vast majority of us it is a toss up with how long we intend to own the coach as a serious factor, and for some there is no way to justify Li. This is a discussion in which the correct answer is personal.
