H3-45 height
Posted by Marvin on February 3, 2020 at 5:16 pmWhat is the height of an H3-45? I saw a unit that had it listed as 13ft. 5inches. Yet the specs say 12ft.6inches. Is that because some converters raise the roof? 13ft. 6 inches is getting very close to the max. height of many bridges. Thanks

I have read 13 feet 3 inches. Looked at some Featherlite H3 45s last summer and that was the figure that was provided to me.

The height will vary, mostly depending on the converter. Things like roof airs, spoilers or awning fairings, satellite dishes etc. all affect the height and the heights are coach specific.
Rule of thumb……….don’t drive any coach under a bridge less than 13’6″.

M,
The base H shell height is 12ft 5 at center roof . 12 ft 3 in at roof edge.this height is beyond cockpit area. Then you add roof mounted awnings. Typical; Girards awning boxes are around 10 inches. Add roof top a/c unit, height variable, fantastic fans. Etc. to error on caution, allow 14 ft high door for a storage garage

My 02 Marathon H was 12′ 10″ with cruiseairs. My 04 Marathon H with roof airs was 13′ 4″.

My shop has 14 ft. doors but there are lots of bridges that are 13-2 to 13-4. Most semis can handle a 13-4 bridge. BUT some bridges are lower at the edges and some have been repaved and the signs have not been changed.

The only place to find bridges lower than 13’6″ is on local roads. A trucker”s map book lists them.
I can count on my fingers the number of times in 30 years a bridge height was a problem, and that includes New England which probably has more low clearances than the whole rest of the country.
But you do have to pay attention to signs.

What went wrong with this driver ? happened late 2019 in Kansas City, MO.
-
We have a national epidemic called stupid. That’s what is wrong with the driver.
If he had gotten a better running start he might have been able to get all the way through, so it must be the city’s fault because in addition to the height being listed they should have posted the best speed to make it through if you were taller than the listed height.
Anyone remember when truckers were highly qualified professionals?

Jon:
Defiantly remember when truck drivers were professionals. I always thought they were professional old guys, but funny that I am the old guy now, the trucker’s all seam to be young guys.

After I retired and sold my business I drove long haul for about 3 months every summer. The average age of OTR drivers is about 55. These are the weathered guys. Pros. It is a horrible life style. Bad for your health and the pay is not great. If I had treated my city drivers like trucking companies treat their employees I would have gone broke! But driving a 780 Volvo or a new Cascadia is awesome. I was lucky as I drove for fun not for a living! The new auto shift transmissions are magical! Driving in the mountains is not that difficult.
