  • Battery Replacement Shutdown Procedure (Liberty)

    Good Morning Jon – in your article detailing your drop-ion Lithium replacement batteries, you mention in advance of installing new batteries:

    “On my Liberty there is a specific sequence required to shut down the electrical system and I followed that procedure.”

    Would you please share those critical steps here or in a PDF in the Articles Section? It would be most appreciated as nothing in any of my bus docs mention the proper procedure. THANK YOU!

    P. S. – I also have (two) OutBack brand inverters

    This is how I shut down my coach. Liberty probably has a couple of plastic engraved labels in your electric compartment, and on or near the Watchdog, and anything they say will over ride what I say below.

    First I shut off the two “battery charger” switches in the electric panel. Do not confuse them with the one labeled 24V charger because that is for the chassis batteries.

    Then I disconnected the Watchdog cable from the based of the Watchdog.

    Then I turned off the two house master switches in the electric bay, followed by the two inverter master switches.

    To power up the coach I reversed the sequence.

    On a previous coach when I made a house battery change the house switches (it was not a Crestron equipped coach) would not function so I rebooted the Allen Bradley system by turning it off with the key in the end unit and when it rebooted everything worked as intended. On this shutdown when I changed batteries the Crestron touch pads did not work, but the next day, after doing nothing they were working. I don’t have a clue why they didn’t work or why they resumed working. It must have been magic.

    I did not disconnect my shore power. There was no need with what I had shut down, but disconnecting shore power adds another layer of safety.

    Lots of good advice here.

    But keep in mind that most if not all the advice is likely based on how the converter originally engineered, designed, and wired the coach. A previous owner or over zealous repair guy coulda tried to outsmart the original converter’s thinking and wired something in special that creates another layer of complexity.

    I don’t know how to find well intentioned, but short-sighted modifications … other than to make your shut-offs and then make sure what you thought was turned off actually is turned off.
