  • Miller insurance

OK thinking I would go with a sponsor, contacted Miller, went thru the routine questions. all answered coverage is OK, not agreed value waiting on an appraisal. got a price it’s OK. placed with National General. so mulled it over about changing, needed a few questions answered. sent Miller asking Natl Gen experience insuring Prevost conversions? how many insured? ,How many Prevost conversions has miller insured with them? claim service?nationwide?

    The Reply

We do a lot of business with nat. gen and place a lot of Rv’s with them. They are rated A+. I don’t have specific data about the rest. My suggestion would be to look them up on some industry websites.

National Generals web site for a quote does not even list a prevost in their list of manufactures. and then I plugged in Vogue which is my convertor and is listed on their manufacturers Price $666.91 per year

Why do I not have a warm and fuzzy feeling

Not sure this will help or not… But we have worked with Miller since we purchased our bus. We have agreed value I want to say our premium is 3-4K a year for our 2007 Marathon. Only had one claim and they were great to work with. If anything the rate seems low to me… is that 6month or annual? if it helps with the math… our agreed value is 590K

    Hope that helps.

The premium does seem low, but if it is not agreed value it may be in line. I have dealt with Explorer and Miller and have a great deal of comfort knowing my coach with agreed value is well protected. I can say that with confidence because I went through a severe fire in the engine compartment with my first coach and because the insurance was placed with a company that knew exactly what a Prevost conversion was there were no issues with repairs or coverage.

I do know both agencies are very familiar with our conversions and if they place my coverage with an insurance company they know that company will protect us.

I doubt however they can provide statistical data on how many coaches they cover.

I will NEVER have other than agreed value insurance. I also will never get insurance on my own because I only want coverage those agencies know are going to properly insure a Prevost conversion. We are not driving conventional RVs and because of that repairs have to be made by people qualified to work on a bus chassis and an interior done by a converter.

    Thanks for your reply

The quote I received from National General was from their web site which does not even list Prevost

The big question is what carrier has Miller placed you with, They represent several carriers.

Miller quoted me using National General. I have a quote for agreed value and actual cash value. I am waiting on an appraisal before I can get agreed value.

We’ve used Miller Agency for years; they put us with Progressive. We did get an appraisal and have Agreed Value, also Miller worked with us to determine a reasonable deductible that would reduce the premiums a bit. Comparing premiums is not really helpful unless the buses are the same year, same converter.

Miller placed us with Nationwide. In September 2016 during our mandated diesel emissions test, damage to our exhaust system occurred. Nationwide adjuster gave us two locations choices for repair: Mira Loma or Dallas. We chose Mira Loma. Deal done. To replace muffler and melted tipped radiator fan blade, Prevost had to pull radiator. Our adjuster didn’t want anyone else to touch the bus.

This is an article I wrote after learning we need to have a better understanding of appraisals. I had a recent appraisal because I was placed with a new insurer by Miller and other than taking photos and filling out a comprehensive survey the process was painless.

    Glen,

Going to the insurers website and selecting Vogue will not likely provide an accurate quote. During the mid 90s, Vogue was also producing non-Prevost class A motorhomes. You should clarify that yours is a Conversion Bus, not a Class A

Roy makes a very good point and there is one thing we know but don’t discuss enough.

We own a bus conversion. We can get cheap insurance but not good insurance or we can get good insurance but it will not be cheap.

Regardless of the age of our Prevost the cost to repair damage to a 25 year old coach is going to be almost the same as repairing a new coach. The parts are equally expensive and the labor is usually the same. What makes premiums less expensive on older coaches is the value of the coach is going to be significantly different with a new coach possibly having a value of $2,000,000 and an older coach may have a value of less than $100,000.

As a result the insurance company is going to have much less exposure with older coaches which is the good news, but the bad news is it doesn’t take much damage to reach the value of an older coach. $150,000 worth of damage on an older coach would have the coach totalled, whereas the same damage on a newer one would be considered a minor repair compared to the coach value.

To add to the complexity of insuring a Prevost conversion is the fact some coach damage impacts the interior and like the shell some interior repairs can get very expensive. Again, new or old coach interiors are going to cost similar amounts to repair so we cannot compare our conversions with motor homes.

In both instances normal motor home repair skills won’t come close to those needed to deal with chassis or conversion repairs. The construction methods are completely different as are the materials used, the paint quality, and sophistication of systems.

Having insurance comparable in price to what we pay for cars saves a lot of money, but in the end it might be false security.

OK, all is well in the bus insurance purchasing arena. the start of this post was to help me know more about the carriers. I had never heard of National General. and I have been with progressive for the last 20 years, and the same agent for that long. but did want to go to an agreed value policy, more because of the age of my bus, as Jon pointed out repair costs are near to the same new or older. older would tend to be totaled with less damage and with ACV and an insurance co shopping for a junker I sure could come up on the short end of stick.

As for the quote from the internet, I posted that to show that most agents don’t know a Prevost from a potty. and as Jon said if you are talking to them and say the word Prevost and get a long silence it’s time to hang up, Had that experience this morning.

Anyway I am all settled in with Miller and National General. just paid them

    Thanks to all that helped

    Andre’ & Kathy:

Miller Agency recommended several appraisers; we chose Mark Koch of Automotive Appraisal Services (1-800-495-2525). Don’t be fooled by the name, he knows bus conversions and he knows Prevosts.

Does anyone know about Safeco Insurance?

I just received my new insurance policy from Safeco the company Explorer put me with. Do any of you wonderful people out there know anything about them. Safeco has me with agreed value, I don’t know about their repair policy, whether or not Prevost or another qualified repair shop is on their list to do repairs. They did say I could choose a qualified repair shop, but I don’t know whether that was BS or not.

    Thanks

Safeco is a Liberty Mutual owned company. They were the ones Explorer sold the book of business to. I got my policy through them, but it was somewhat of a challenge. It took several calls and emails to get my agreed value setup properly. I got it from them because there was nobody else I found that would do an agreed value policy. I got a quote from Miller, but they did not have agreed value so I said no thanks.

I have not had a claim with Safeco, but they told me the same thing about choosing a repair shop. I hope I never have to find out.
