Mike, after we changed our radiator (it didn’t leak either) we saw a remarkable reduction in temps especially going over mountains. Temps now almost never go to 190 F. We went with a new rad from Prevost and they provided a 10% discount just for asking. Whatever you do, take the time now to replace both thermostats. We also flushed and switched over to new coolant. I was told the manifolds can be welded and resurfaced but others on the forum may know better. We found replacements locally but I’ve seen them on ebay. Please take lots of pics of the turbo RnR for the rest of us! I for one am looking forward to hear how that goes.

Failure to adhere to the coolant change schedule is the likely biggest cause.

That is good to know about your temps stabilizing. I am always nervous climbing grades with my bus watching the temp go up and up, We have a 7% grade here that climbs from sea level to about 2K feet that pushes my coolant temp just to the point i feel uncomfortable to continue. I am going to tackle the rodding and cleaning myself to save a few bucks. I found a manifold online for 6500, i might order that one and face my other side to clean up.

I have another question regarding these coolant pipes that run across the front. They are copper pipe. When these busses were new, did they leave the bare copper exposed? or did the factory paint them? if so what color?

It can be welded with Nickel 99 rod, but probably cheaper to replace the manifold.
-
I have a used one on order, and i am going to try and weld this one up and see what happens. It can be my backup.
-
Our coolant pipes are also painted (silver). I think they probably came that way. While the coolant was out we replaced the hoses with new (silicon) from Fleetpride. I used a very light coat of Permatex Indian Head sealant and it works great to eliminate leaks on the hose/pipe connections.

What has your max turbo boost read? Miine, when it was working properly, was 15-20. Then, something went wrong, and no one could ever figure out what. My max boost dropped to about 12 and mileage and performance dropped dramatically. Mine was a DDEC I so no one knew $hit and the readouts were no help. Flat lands we cruised at 70 but any hill dropped our speeds dramatically. Our last climb up to the Eisenhower tunnel, we had to disconnect the towed and travel in 1st gear all the way to the top.
I miss my early 8V as it was a power monster compared to the current series 60 but getting 7 MPG does ease the pain a bit compared to my old 5 MPG (5.5 before things went $hitty.

I have never seen my boost above 12-15, although i had many exhaust leaks and a broken ear off my manifold.

Today i faced both of my exhaust manifolds. Fairly easy to do, setup was a bit tricky. 30″ cleaned up one and 25″ on the other. They are both now flat within 01″.

Mike, great job! Did you pull the turbo yet? Come on, go for it! Please take lots of pics. A couple years ago I found a brand new one on Craigslist but haven’t developed the courage to swap it out yet.
-
I have not pulled it off yet, I am trying to get up the courage. 🙂

New Muffler installed. Prevost changed the muffler slightly, the down tube is back about 2 1/2″.
