The major reason for the price change is the way the majors buy fuel. The buy xxx gallons at xxx dollars for future delivery. When the oil prices tanked they wound up with some “expensive” fuel to sell. When they go thru that fuel and move to the next xxx gallons they will breathe easier again. This is why Flying J failed. They bought a bunch of fuel and the price tanked, having to sell it below cost put them out and Pilot bought them.

I agree with Mikee.

I suspect (emphasis on “suspect”) that Love’s fuel traders had taken down forward contracts for deliver this spring that were based on previous experience, forecasted trucking activity across the country, etc. etc. etc.

But along came the CoronaVirus.

Love’s forecasted volumes dropped dramatically. Normally the traders can “pare out” of the unneeded contracts at a modest cost using what is called a “pare off”. But the dramatic drop in oil prices (remember negative oil prices?) made this tool too expensive.

So I “suspect” that Love’s decided to give the benefit of the anticipated losses to their volume customers like TSD and the large trucking companies. In addition to giving good customers a benefit, they might have been able to increase volume with the low prices.

Just my theory.

Here is a summary of my last fuel stop.

Note the TSD Fee is $1.75, which equates to 10% of my total discount.

So my total discount was only $15.72 = $0.14 per gallon = 6%.

I have ran these roads for years knowing exactly how far I was from the next Flying J in any direction. With this fuel card, I adjusted to knowing Love’s locations. Since Love’s changed to straight 16 cents per gallon discount through TSD, I am looking for TA and Petro locations. I saved $90 on my last Petro fill up.

I am thankful for TSD.

There is no doubt that right now since Love’s changed the discount they were allowing TA/Petro is where to fuel up. With a little planning fuel can be bought consistently somewhere around $1.70 to $1.80 with the discount.

Some states are to be avoided for refueling because even with the discount they are above $20.

Jon, this summer we did 7,200 miles and I also searched out the TA on the road , however at times i was forced to a Loves and also complained about 20 g fuel , lol At those times I remembered the 40 plus i was paying in Ca a few years back and the constant 3.50 or so and being happy hahaha Man how times have changed .

Prior to the card i knew every cheap/good fuel spot on the East coast . Thank the Lord those days are over 🙂
