I would like to share what I have always told friends and family regarding owning/carrying a firearm for personal/family protection. Beyond initial and continued safety and range training, one must be mentally prepared for a violent confrontation. As a retired 30 year patrol lieutenant in the fourth largest city in America, I was always dismayed seeing the aftermath/destruction of violent predators preying upon the public. Criminals are ruthless, have no values, and enjoy their sport. I have trained at the Front Sight facility in Parumph, Nevada. Excellent program that will not only enlighten you regarding armed self defense but sharpen your shooting skills dramaticly as well.

If you go, plan on bringing several hundred rounds of ammunition. I went in September and the range temps were in the triple digits, so plan accordingly if you visit during the warmest months.

There is one thing we need to be aware of, as we travel we tend to load and unload and I know you know what I mean! I was very fortunate last time I was in Canada on July 3rd crossed in a Ft Erie, I had just bought a 22 pistol and was trying to find ammo for it, No I did not have the gun with me, I left it with a traveling companion in Michigan and told her I would retrive it in Florida in the fall, I had found some Ammo in Michigan and forgot I had it in the bay, 2 bricks 1,000 rounds, The custom guy was a pita, took my keys raised hell to show me he could, I just wonder what would have happened if he would have found those 2 bricks of 22’s. After I got home I was cleaning the bays and found it, I was a lucky boy. Now I only put guns and ammo in one place! Gary

Here is a list of the “Right to Carry” states and those where that right does not exist. There is an excellent website where you can click on a state and get the specifics on that particular state.

It is my understand and I know its true in the right to carry states. You are only protected by the “Castle rule” if you are parked and leveled. It is then that you are protected by both state and federal rules. Here’s that website.

Has anyone had their bus searched? I am in Illinois, nope not proud of that one bit. In fact if it weren’t for the fact I have a 35 year old service business and could not continue if I moved, I would move to north Texas or some other 2nd amendment friendly state. Of course guns are not our only problem here but maybe things may be a changin with the recent elections. I have an illinois permit but that is new to Illlinois. I have always carried and no one south of Chicago cared, including the police. The way I look at it, first is to stay away from the unfriendly states if I can, but I am going to carry and have one in the coach no matter what. If it ever comes out, things have gone south already and breaking the law is the least of my worries… Just my humble opinion..

Where in Illinois do you live? If you’re far north, move to Wisconsin and you’ll kill at least two birds with one stone. Wisconsin is concealed carry friendly and we’re also business friendly!

Here is a link to another reciprocity map. Just select your home state and any other states you are licensed for to see which states accept your licenses. My wife and I are both licensed in Massachusetts and both have non-resident licenses for New Hampshire and Florida. We are always armed when traveling. Florida allows “non-residents” to get licensed through the mail. The process is pretty easy. Go to the reciporocity map , put in just your home state and see where you are covered. Go back and start over and add in Florida as a non-resident and see the additional states that you are now covered in. For those who travel out west, Utah is a good state to apply for, also available thrtough the mail.
