Too Old for U.P. Resorts
I was planning to visit the Upper Peninsula in our mint 1992 Country Coach and was turned down by both major resorts under the “less than 10 years old” clause. Never had an issue with that before.
Any suggestions on a place to stay for a week?

Liam please name names. Did they actually see the coach or did they make the decision based on a telephone call. I always tell the the coach is new.

Hearthside and Petosky ownership resorts. Wrote them both a nice email asking about best time to visit and got a sterile “dear John” reply. No answer to my actual question or suggestion on where to stay. Wrote both back saying I had never had an issue given my bus is in mint condition (repainted and buffed by Prevost 2 years ago) but no answer back.

I called Hearthside with a similar question last year, especially regarding ownership and older buses, and was told that older buses are acceptable if you provide a picture that shows “pride of ownership”.
FWIW, last year I had interior updates done and purchased new stickers for the door that say “Series 2014”. Few will be able to tell different and all of them are on this board.

Aren’t both Hearthside and Petosky in the Lower Penninsula of Michigan? I think they are both south of the Mackinac Bridge.
I could not fathom anyone in the “real U.P.” of Michigan turning anything down that money associated with it. Very little in the “real U.P.” is old … its all ancient.

I expected to be asked for a photo and would understand. We also did a full renovation last year. People can’t believe how old my bus is. The fact that it spent most of its life indoors and the new paint really help.

Since that rule is meant to keep out beat up old Bounders, I personally feel it’s ok to bend the truth a bit. If your bus looks good and is not leaking fluids I’ve found any bus conversion is welcome anywhere. When I get that question while making a reservation I just say its an ’06. Then I don’t have to hassle with sending photos for approval, etc. The desk clerk never even looks at the coach at check in, and even if they did, they would not know what year it is. Same applied when I had my ’90 XL. I’m confident the parks would rather have a nice looking Prevost of any age than a newer plastic coach. In May I stayed in a park with a 10 year rule. There was a gorgeous home-converted Eagle Model 10 a few sites down that must have been 30+ years old. It looked better than most of the plastic rigs in the park.

Maybe Okie will jump in here, but his Eagle is a perfect example of how age has nothing to do with the quality of a coach’s appearance. His coach will draw a crowd at any RV resort because it looks so good.
Resorts that discriminate due to the age of a coach go on my list of places I avoid. If the resort or its owners are so uptight about appearances I prefer to go elsewhere. I am tired of situations where I have to mix with people whose shit does not stink.
Maybe sometime I will let everyone know how I really feel.

This has been addressed previously, but when asked by any resort or campground as to the year of your bus, just say 2007. No one but us knows the differences. Geo.

I know the intent is to maintain a certain appearance. A lot of RV resorts have spent serious money to create a spectacular facility with beautiful landscaping. And they charge dearly for that elegance. Which makes a concern over the year of the coach kind of unimportant. The cost of a night’s stay in a campground defines who is going to stay there. The old skoolie painted with a roller that uses old Burger King booths and chairs for the dinette is not likely going to be there because the owner is struggling to afford his bus. He is not going to spend the equivalent of a tank of fuel for a night in an RV park because it has nice flowers.
But if he does choose to stay there I cannot see how anyone is harmed by that, how it adversely affects the amenities, or how it is going to change the Woodall’s rating.

Earlier this year on another thread I said I planned to stay at Hearthside in Petosky this summer for a week. My new plan is that I never will. Happy to say that as I write this we are sitting in Penninsula State Park in Door County, Wi. 4000 beautiful acres on Green Bay along with tents, pop ups, fifth wheels, bumper pulls, and everyone is happy. No problem respecting the 10 year rulers, plenty of other options that are consistent with our culture, and are willing to take our dough.
