The Good Ole Days
Posted by Archived on June 27, 2020 at 9:19 amI flew for 35 years and owned a total of 13 planes, singles & twins. Later in life I had a partner who was an A&P and IA. We would buy a tired plane, make needed cosmetic, airframe and avionics repairs, then fly it for awhile eventually selling it and moving on to the next one. It was a great time and being able to fly the various models was priceless. No commercial stuff for me, just SEL, Multi Instrument.
Going from memory..
Cherokee 180 (2)
Cherokee 6 – 260
Cessna 182
Cessna 177
Truman Tiger
Grumman AA1A
Piper Comanche Single
Beach Debonair
Piper Twin Comanche Turbo
Piper Aztec (2)
Piper Apache Doyne 180 Conversion
My favorites, the Debonair, Cherokee 6 and the D model Aztec (known as the Aztruck).

Obviously Tom trades everything he owns often. Buses, cars, homes and planes.
I don’t believe he has traded wives. Nancy is a keeper.

I solo’d in a Cherokee 6 in 1976. It was my 16th birthday!

The Cherokee six, the 182 and the Aztec are all trucks to some degree but I think the best all around personal airplane out there, in my opinion, would probably be the 182. There are a lot of times that I think that if I had used good sense I would still have mine.

My list is not as extensive…but I loved ’em all!
Started with an Aeronca Champ…65HP…no electrics. 50 hours….Did my cross country…My instructor crawled out after about four+ hours of flying….said: “That’s the longest damn cross country I’ve ever been on!”
Next: Maule 180HP, c/s prop….great plane…slow and noisy…land in any pig patch you can find. Logged about 400 hours
Skylane Turbo 182 Turbo RG…docile…load carrying pack mule…wonderful airplane. Sold it cause I could make a profit…bad move!
Skylane Turbo 182 Turbo RG….never was quite as fast but great airplane.
Cessna P-210. Somewhat of high pilot workload…comfortable, fast…great IMC platform…
Sold it…the next owner crashed it! N6669P Great plane…sad ending.

Really cool!!
I don’t really understand why Architectural Digest would have made such a statement, but not so long ago they stated in an article that the two most beautiful things ever created by man were the E-Type Jaguar and the Learjet.
I instructed in the Lear 35 and 31A for FlightSafety International for five years and I’m fortunate enough to own an E-Type Jag and I couldn’t agree more. I too, like Tom, have owned a number of airplanes, but not as many as Tom, from J-3 Cubs, Luscombes, a Rearwin Cloudster, a Cessna Airmaster, and others. Right now I have a 1946 Globe Swift, a 1950 Cessna 195 and a 1969 Cessna 310P and I think all three, and the little Jag, are a “until death do us part”, part of my life. I consider myself to be quite a blessed individual and am very thankful. Also, I couldn’t have been more fortunate in the family situation that I have now with real team player for a partner.
The “Good ‘Ole Days” for me, are right now. Even with all that is going on around us.

I’m posting this for Fred. Headline – Max 737 90 degree takeoff. We know it’s BS, but looks impressive.

No aircraft, but agree with JC Jr. we own a 1970 E-Type drophead coupe. We call it Miss Kitty. Jon got a ride in it 8 years ago

Jim and Chris’s E type is beautiful beyond words.
Some vehicles are timeless beauties and nothing else can match them.
-

Maybe I should modify the Topic to Aviation and Car’s, may be fun. Jon?
