You are going to an excessive amount of work to test the CAC. Just squirt it with soapy water as Al suggested. There is a specific leak down rate specified in the Prevost manual but the reality is if you blow big bubbles or if you cannot get the required boost you have a pretty good idea already.

I don’t think anyone with a non-egr engine has reported a CAC failure.

I do not suspect a problem with mine, however I believe the proper test is 30 psi for 15 seconds.

I want to make sure it is at spec, and learn some new stuff in the process. For a badly leaking one, spraying it down would show right away for sure and is quick and easy.

I thought the XL2 was the *real* bus! Everyone thinks rock band when I pull up!!

Did some more digging and gonna follow conventional wisdom here and do prelim test with spray bottle on my CAC, with so few miles do not suspect to find anything amiss…and I can’t be bothered to buy an expensive test kit or cobble one together right now.

Lot of little mods to do in the next 10 days before I hit the road. Got the Detroit injector tool ordered today and will do job this weekend.

    Just about finished up.

Going to reinstall the Jakes tomorow, set the lash on them then seal everything back up after clenaing up the valve cover and making sure everything is tidy around the head.

Once I finish I will post a new thread with write up and photos.

So far all valves tight and out of spec except for exhausts on #1 which were close. All injectors heights were out of spec.

Detroit manual says 120,000k is first time they should be checked, but then they updated that and added to manual that 60K is when it should be looked at an adjusted if necessary. I am at 82,500 right now.

Anyways, once you get into it, not all that bad, no way would I have been able to do #4,5,6 from below,, so much easier doing it from the bedroom!

On another website that I read, it was mentioned that the Detriot Diesel was discontinued for OTR service. Is that true?

I know that CAT got out of the business for Trucks and RV’s but I had not heard about DD.

    Thanks,

    MM.

Nope, lotta Detroits out there, may only be able to get one in a Freightliner now though I think.

The Series 60 is no longer produced I think, but DD15 DD16 are pretty well regarded engines and lots of new Freightliners I see have them.

Mostly Cummins, Detroit and Volvo now, as well as some Paccar engines too in Class 8 stuff. (not sure if Navistar has given up yet, they got thier ass kicked)

Another recommendations is to order up the Jake brake rebuild/update kit. They re-spec’d the springs. This is for the 2003 12.7. I would guess that I gained 25% improvement with the Jakes
