Spring Mini Rally – Sevierville, TN – April

I just visited with Don the manager of the resort and I can say for sure we will not lack for things to do or see, places to buy stuff, or places to eat.
We will put together a goody bag with brochures of all the great things to do and see so everyone will have many choices for how to spend time at the rally. The number of folks signed up is very close to using all the river sposts, so if you haven’t signed up now is the time to do it. Once the attendees exceeds the 25 river sites those that register will be placed in the back row, which is still very nice.
For those who have never been to the Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville area you are in for a very pleasant surprise. Expect to have many area theaters and great shows to choose from, a large concentration of artists and craftsmen, plenty of opportunities for food and shopping, an opportunity to enjoy the Smoky Mountain National Park, and two major attractions, Dollywood and Ripley’s Aquarium. About 11,000,000 visitors come to this area annually because of all it has to offer. Plan on having a lot of fun.
You will never see all the area has to offer for the few days scheduled for the rally, so if you have time you may wish to extend your stay. The RV park is so great you may want to do that just so you can relax by the river.

We are planning to come to the rally even tho we are still without a bus. The time we spent meeting some of you in OKC was great and we want to get to know more bus owners.
Can anyone recommend a good place to stay near the campground?

If you Google the campground and do a satellite view, follow the Rte 66 back across the river northbound. On the western side of Rte 66 just north of the CG is a fairly new motel with a blue roof. Easy to spot in the Goggle satellite view. It is a Baymont Suites and Inn and is very close.

It is a tourist area so there is no end of options, but if that doesn’t work for you try to get as close as possible because the highway is under construction and there are times the traffic is bad.

Jon, thanks for the info and recommendation. We made our reservations at the Baymont Inns and Suites. We are also looking at a few buses for sale in Tennessee while we are there.

Those buses are really going to shine because Truk has offered to wash them all. What a guy!
But don’t come to the rally just for the free bus wash. The Sevierville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge area has endless things for everyone to do. There is a large and very good community of crafts artists for those interested in unique items. The area has many theaters for evening entertainment. The more active folks can do Zip-lines or hike the Smokies.
Ripley’s has an excellent aquarium in the heart of Gatlinburg. For the kids at heart Dollywood has a wide range of amusement rides, but we love going there to see the craftsmen make soap, do wood carving, blacksmithing, and to enjoy the live entertainment throughout the park.
Bring a canoe or kayak and enjoy the French Broad River. If you have a motorcycle you have to ride the “Dragon”.
If you haven’t yet signed up now is the time. One thing is for sure. You will not lack for things to do when in Sevierville. Did I mention right next to the RV park is a huge tool store. a large store dedicated to knives and an outlet for Lodge cast iron cookware? And just down the road is a large and varied outlet mall?
This is going to be fun.

We love the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area.
If all the busses are going to convoy to Jon’s house to take turns backing up his driveway I might consider stopping in.

With the exception of Jim Lane (Coloradobus) nobody that has had their bus up my driveway did it themselves. Jim was a professional driver so that was not a surprise.
The thing everyone has to remember is backing up is not a big deal. (Relatively speaking). The challenge comes in being up the top and realizing you have to go down. Makes doing a brake check and the ensuing slow roll down the driveway the thrilling part. My neighbors would love to see all the Sevierville rally coaches lined up on our road waiting their turn up the driveway.
One related note: The 3 mile stretch of road to the driveway is so narrow that when the RH side wheels are on the white edge line, the LH side wheels are on the double yellow center line. There are no shoulders, and if you drop off on the passenger side there are places along the road where the bus will end up rolling over and getting seen on the evening news.

Maybe you can move to level ground before the rally! I have no desire to be on the evening news.

One think that I don’t remember being mentioned is the Bass Pro Shop is just on the other side of I40 from the park.

I just converted all the 18″ flourescent tubes in my bus to LED. If anyone attending the rally is interested in 20 used but working F15T8 bulbs for free, I would bring them with me. Hate to just throw them out.

Hi everyone. Going to be in Asheville, NC on the way to Sevierville and looking for suggestions for where to stay near downtown(no toad). Also, Must do, see or eat. Not enough time for Biltmore.

I hate to see myself write this as we were so looking forward to this rally … seeing old friends and meeting new ones, but due to family visiting from Australia first of May for a month, we are going to have to cancel this rally but will be in Branson for the PC BIG ONE !!

I have stayed here twice in Asheville and love it. Very small with an awesome view. Only issue is it is 1-way up in the afternoon and 1-way out in the morning. My first time we didn’t have a toad and didn’t know and were just amazingly lucky there was no on-comming traffic. If it helps, they have a deal with a local company and can have a rental car at the site for you. Pretty reasonable as I remember. If you don’t have time for the estate, there is something I would recomend (but not with the bus). Google “Grove Park Inn” a 100 year old historic hotel that looks like it is right out of Yellowstone National Park. You can get a great lunch out on the veranda. We were just there for the annual Arts and Crafts antique sale and show which is a pilgramage for folks who love bungalow architecture. It is right in town but the driveway and parking didn’t look ver bus friendly. I have to say that in general, other than Biltmore which is extremely bus friendly, I didn’t find the town to be friendly in terms of navigating and parking.
A better option would be to go straight to the rally site, and catch a ride to Asheville with someone in the club. The drive through Smokey Mtn. National Park to Asheville and back is a nice all-day side trip.

About two weeks to go and the weather is great. The temps have finally warmed up. The leaves are breaking out all over.
Combine great weather with an area loaded with things to do, shows to see, places to shop and places to eat it looks like we are going to have a great time. Did I mention the sites along the river are some of the nicest in any campground?
