Jeff thanks so much. My plan at this point is gathering all the stuff I need and working on it at a friends shop next week. At this point I am going to relocate the regulator so it hopefully stays cooler and at a minimum is easy to access. I had already ordered the $42 one. If it works I will order another just to have as a backup. If the first one fails I will order what you suggest.

I drilled a hole in the bottom of the box, put a rubber grommet in and ran the wires down through the hole to the newly located VR under the box. (existing wires were long enough).
I am currently away from the bus and can not provide pictures at this time. Sorry
I basically installed a L bracket under the mounting points for the box then bolted the VR to the bracket.

Why wouldn’t you not try and install what you took out it still seems to be available from Basler Electric.

1. The regulator from Powertec is $482.95.
2. I did that once and it last 3.5 years.
3. The original last 28 years in the same location.
I am not cheap with anything that I replace on my coach. I go with oem equipment as much as possible and generally at a much higher cost. If it last 30 years the first time I will certainly pay more for another 30.
That was not the case with the Basler part. I am going to relocate the VR to a cooler location. If I just wasted $41 than so be it. Basler has already proved to me that it now produces a product that is far inferior to the original.
The new VR came yesterday and it appears to be almost identical to my 42 month old worthless part. I will know more next week.

When mine went I considered replacing with a different VR. Power Tech insisted theirs was different and superior to any others so I spent the money and purchased Power Tech’s. That one lasted less than 150 Hrs. I did purchase the 2nd VR from Power Tech too. If this one gives up to soon then I will be purchasing another brand.

Yesterday I installed the new voltage regulator for the generator. I also replaced the individual exhaust gaskets also on the generator. As documented previously the generator started acting up over the last few times of use. It continually became worse over time.
The pictures should explain most of the process for the install. If anyone has any questions I will be happy to further explain. On my 1993 Liberty the VR was installed in the metal enclosure behind the gen motor. I replaced the the first regulator that lasted 25 years, less than 4 years ago. This was done at an event and not in the best of conditions. Considering that the entire unit needs to be mostly removed from the bus this made for a challenging repair, to say the least. The new VR from Powertec was nearly $500 and needed a fair amount of modification to the setup to be installed.
Since having issues again. I researched and found a VR with the same specs on Amazon for $47.59. AVC-63 4 The only exception is that the new one does not have a U/F adjustment. Yesterday, I built a several foot long, 4 wire, 10 gauge harness and moved the VR to a cooler vibration free location 2 compartments away. After installed I started the generator and let it get up to temperature. I noticed that Line 1 was showing 123 volts and Line 2 was 125. Prior to this install they ran 124 and 126. After a small, easy to access adjustment both were at a very solid 126. I then turned on all breakers including all 3 Cruisairs. It was in the 80’s here in FL yesterday. The generator ran very solid for 3 hours at exactly 180 degrees.
I am not advocating this VR for anyone else. I do not want to be responsible for any other members generator. However, for $48 I will order a backup to have in stock. The best part is I will now be able to replace it in 3 minutes (with a cocktail in hand) vs 3 hours of a major hassle.
I will be attending a Collector Car Auction in Punta Gorda, FL for several days next week. I will be using the generator most of the time, so this should be a good long term test. I will report back then.

I guess a previous owner had this problem and fix too, because our genny VR is located next to the buddy plug in the inverter/converter electrical bay where you put yours. Our PT gen has almost 14,000 hrs.

Thats good news. Looking back at your thread i like the thought process with the cheap regulator with the spare and improving the accessibility. You already gave the expensive one a try, right?. Good stuff.

Yes expensive one last for less than 4 years. I can buy 12 of the cheap ones for about the same money. It will be interesting to see how long this lasts and if I ever feel the need to switch to anything else.
