Make sure you understand Dan’s advice about the red ball being in the middle of the LOWER sight glass.

Thanks guys, I check and it is R134a I will get a large can just in case. Also it was good to learn how to read the site glass which helps in keeping an eye on everything. That is why this site is great for sharing problems and learning about our coaches.

    Thanks everyone

Resurrecting this post as my blower in condenser bay no workie. It quit on the way home from the Gulf Coast and dumped R134 out pop off valve on accumulater bottle running down road in a cloud of vapor. Thought the bus was on fire. Wish it was as I have it insured. . Gotta have blower (condenser bay) running or pressure and heat will build up and dump somewhere, and mine popped off, thank goodness not a hose. Had this happen almost 7 years ago after converting to R134 from 12. Think they over charged system. Changed relay under driver area door and wondered where solenoids are located. The above pics shows them in the condenser bay but mine doesn’t have them there. Checked and fans turn free and but no juice to motor. Always something and fixing to pull the plug on this puppy and let somebody turn it into a tiny house. It will make a good un. PS, looks like my pressure switches didn’t work for it to pop off.

    Darrell,

The sightglass they are referring to is in the curbside condenser bay. Do not get it confused with the sightglass on the compressor itself. That one is for compressor oil. Whole different animal. Search Don’s posts ( Lonestarace ) he is very through on this stuff.

Asking about breakers and solenoids for condenser blower on the 1991 XL. I know where the sight glass float balls are. Gonna check in Evaporator bay tomorrow for breakers and solenoids. They’re not in condenser bay. .

On my 87 with OTR the solenoids and circuit breakers were in a box attached to the ceiling of the first bay.

Thanks Jon. Just went and checked evaporator bay and they weren’t there. Going to go check 1st bay. Even check in Aqua Hot Bay just then. Glad the coach is 100 foot away.

Nothing in bay one or any bay. Just checked them all. Will call Prevost tomorrow and see if they know where the Easter egg is hidden in a 1991 XL Le Mirage. Better yet will call Welch Industries as they seem to know more about these systems then Prevost.

When the coaches are getting older than the “experts” it is getting tougher to get answers, and even harder to get correct answers.

The old folks who have retired know where to find stuff.

Follow the electrical cables from your evaporator and/or condensor fan. They will lead you to the solenoids and CBs. Mine has a 120 amp CB for each fan.

When your bus was converted from R12 to R134a freon, many parts should have been changed over too. Like pressure switches, pop off valve, oil, hoses?

    R12 compatible with minerial oil
    R134a compatible with synthetic/polyester oil

    2.5 lbs R12 = 2 lbs R134a
    30 lbs R12 = 24 lbs R134a

R134a low side pressure operates at slightly lower psi than R12, 30 psi vs 33 psi
R134a high side pressure operates about 10% higher psi than R12, 223 psi vs 200 psi.

Nope on following cables. The cables go into bay wall. After that who knows where. That’s why I was wondering if somebody had a 1991 XL and where they are.

Ditto what Glen said. Prevost and converters, regardless of vintage of coach often are routing cables, wires, air hoses, etc. in ways tracing them at best is difficult.

I know it sounds like I am beating a dead horse and I shouldn’t be, but our coaches are built so things like valves, electrical components, wires, cables, power supplies, and all kinds of things are out of sight. And they are hidden not only under sink cabinets behind panels, but in bays, the ceiling of bays, behind panels in bays, etc. not to mention behind closets, drawers, and panels.

To make it worse, they not only have different locations for stuff based on the year of the chassis and conversion, each converter locates stuff in different places from other converters.

So my free advice worth every penny you guys pay for it is to spend a weekend with your coach unbuttoning everything you can find and seeing what you find, and then trying to figure out what the stuff does and what systems use what you find. Or plan on bringing the coach back to the converter or experts like Tradewinds or ETLC and letting them solve your problems.

Yeah on different issues I’ve had with mine over the years, trying to find a company that works on these older coaches is a pita. 70 miles west of Austin Tx. and nobody around here close for sure. Cole Custom Coach out of Wyoming just did a few of these conversions with new Prevosts and just for a few years back in the early to mid 90’s. Have called several, Marathon Coach, Dallas, Outlaw Conversions out of Stephenville Tx. no luck. Texas Custom Coach down Pipecreek south of us calls somebody in and really they just want to charge systems up. Might have to break down and head East to Houston after I call and see if they know. Issues I’ve had in the past , they aren’t a bundle of info, and I can’t blame um, as they want you to take it in and have somebody start checking the thing over. What I’ve found out on air issues, Several thousand dollars and several trips for the same thing, they can’t find or fix things any better than we can. Oh well, the search continues.
