Usual procedure in the UK to say thanks when the guy behind flashes is to indicate (blink) left and then right a couple of times. Probably a 99% return rate.

Yep, some of our truckers here will do the ‘left right, left right’ blinking maneuver as a thank you.

I’m like Boater Al, I’ll use my ‘4 ways’ to say thank you.

Most of the new generation drivers could really give a crap, can’t find the flash button and can barely speak english. Besides, they hate you because you’re rich. It’s easy to pick them out, when you flash and they pull back in without the blink, blink thank you, they see you as a PIA RV that can’t backup and can barely hold the steering wheel straight.

Sorry, ole truckers never die, they just fade away, but there are a few of us left.

    Mark,

Maybe you haven’t found the intermitten button on the end of your turn signal to blink your clearance lights like a big truck.

    BV,

Yes, I’m aware of the clearance light button on the end of the turning signal stalk. But, I was wondering how noticeable they would be as they are so high up (on sunny daytime driving).

Sunday night was the rare occasion that we drove at night getting to Texarkana, TX, to the Shady Pines RV park.

I noticed (and tested) that my brake lights DO NOT come on with the use of the engine retarder. If there is a way to turn that feature on, I would like the retarder to active the brake lights.

Actually, I’m at Prevost Ft. Worth having our front foglight replaced (defective) under warranty. I’ll ask them if thats a possibility.

On edit: I just asked the tech and he thinks it is a programable feature…. I’ll post the answer when he finds out.

I also think the thank-you-blink varies by region. I find it much more common in the South.

Like Tom I am getting frustrated at dumb ass drivers and the so called professional truckers are among them.

In the 25 years we have owned coaches there has been a dramatic shift in attitudes so I have stopped the courtesy flashing of lights. If I get the lights when passing I make sure to thank the driver, but as far as flashing drivers who pass me it is a waste of time. They either rarely respond, or worse they clear your bumper and before you know it you are inches away from the trailer because they aren’t leaving any room.

Last week most of them were working at 7-11 and this week they are professionals.

If you want some fun, go to a truck stop and watch them trying to back up.

Here is another opinion on brake lights coming on with retarder-jake use.

The person following you knows your braking when seeing your brake lights. All other is slowing down with a brake light on and hoping the person tailgating you understands.

I pulled my relay long ago for jake brake lights.

And Thank you BoaterAl, as I now do not have to hunt for that relay! I agree, no brake light with Retarder/Jake!

    Boater Al and Tom,

Why don’t you want the brake lights to come on?

If you have the retarder on (on a Liberty), in position 6, the coach is really slowing fast. I want people to know I’m slowing.

I really wouldn’t put it in 1, 2 or 3 and roll forever, when it’s time to stop, I’ll go from 0-6 on the retarder pretty quick.

Well, I travel with our Jake on most of the time and use our service brakes for stopping. I just don’t want to alarm the folks behind me with lights everytime the jake goes off.

When we had our Foretravel with the retarder, we did the same thing. Also, caution on running the retarder from 0-6 as those transmission temps climb pretty quickly. Also, you might want to ask Liberty/Prevost on where is the reading from the trans temp coming from. If it’s the sump, it’s not a true temp of the transmission. We used a silverleaf that gave a more accurate read of the temp. Very important in mountain driving is keeping that trans temp within specs…

The only reason I pulled the relay for the retarder or jake was because when the coach lets off the accellerator, whether it is your foot or the cruise control the stop lights would come on. Since I rarely use the retarder in lieu of the brake that meant that in almost every instance the stop lights came on it was because if I lifted my foot on the pedal or the cruise lifted its foot from the pedal.

On a rolling interstate that means every time you crested a slight rise and started down the other side the foot was off the pedal and the stop lights came on. Then if you picked up speed to go around someone and then lifted the foot from the pedal to get back to normal speed the stop lights came on. I don’t know about you guys but it pisses me off when someone passes and then applies the brake. Even if you are not doing that the guy behind you doesn’t know that.

I want the folks who have been behind me to know if my brakes lights are coming on I am slowing or stopping, but if all they see every few minutes or so is stop lights because the foot was off the pedal when will they believe you are really slowing down?

Just a note, the jake or retarder have to be engaged for the brake lights to come on. If the retarder main switch is on, but the selector stalk is in the zero position the lights won’t come on but they will from 1 to 6

To each his own I guess. I leave my jakes on to keep nuts off my bumper and stop lights come on when it hits jakes. . I hate it when they get behind so close to tow vehicle I can’t see them.
