Harry (about the suspension video)….. I think our tag axles give somewhat of a ‘smoothing’ effect like the double axle on the GMC.

When I leave my storage facility in CA, there is a large speed bump. I go slow with the front and as the drive axle goes over the speed bump, the tag softens the motion.

Thank you Mark and I think you’re absolutely right. Why do you think as an industry they went with the tandem wheels instead of the “One behind the other” as shown on the GMC?

Maybe it’s as easy as GMC built there own chassis instead of the standard truck chassis? But to my knowledge they never built anything else with this configuration.

I’m curious about it because every comment has been “loved it, the ride, comfort etc was great. But it was the only “one wheel behind the other on a motorhome”. Why?

Or put another way “Why are tandem wheels better than one behind the other? Tracking, weight dispersement?

I wonder if anyone has upgraded the drive train to a more heavy duty 4 or 6 speed automatic and maybe the more efficient LS motor with EFI versus what I think back in the day was a Rochester QuadraJet.

Harry, since there is no rear axle on the GMC, that limited the weight that it can carry. And, as the video showed, the GMC’s rear single wheels put in tandem allowed the floor to be lower.

The deep pockets of GM allowed the engineers and designers to play with different concepts. The regular motorhome builders were only able to buy the chassis ‘off the shelf’ because of costs. So, the only thing out there were the dually single axle bread truck chassis’s.

Personally, I think an updated reintroduction of that chassis shell and updated drive-train would be a good seller. If I were looking at a class C, I would rather have the GMC updated version.

Thinking more about the GMC motorhome, I don’t recall it ever being converted into an ambulance.

I see no reason why it couldn’t be converted into an effective ambulance.

Hmmmm… So what are you saying Dick, if you see an accident you’d want to convert your GMC into an ambulance? Dick, I know you well enough to know you’ve made a relevant point. But I must admit you’ve lost me in this. Why would Diane for example want to convert one or all of her three GMC’s into an ambulance?
