I thought you may enjoy this video on the 1973-1978 GMC MotorHome. I’ve seen them through the years but never been inside of one. It discusses why GM stopped producing them which is also interesting and things we’ve talked about here on the forum… It ends with a Prevost that I thought was interesting!

Cool video Harry. A good friend of ours brother has one, he tells the story of traveling with them, everyone oohs and aahs over the GMC. At the time he had the top of the line Monaco and kept saying “What am I, chopped liver”(-:

Good video Harry.. Back in the day my first motorhome was a 1977 Winnebago 22’ Brave and at the time the GMC’s were most desired.

Oh, and that 3 speed transmission is a ‘mpg’ killer…… A guy I know that was in my previous RV club says he is lucky to get 6 miles per gallon.

Back in the 70s my dad rented a 26′ GMC for our family summer vacation. When we got home he liked it so much he bought one. 26′ GMC Royale, 455 Olds, 3 speed automatic TurboHydromatic 425 frt transaxle, same as Olds Toronado.
Cost of fuel was of little concern back then.
A neighbor/friend of mine sold his 26′ GMC a yr ago because he never used it. He gave me the ZipDee awning off it to put on my race trailer.

My first motor home trip was to Expo 67 in Montreal with my parents. I always thought we rented a GMC but clearly it wasn’t made yet. But that is what it looked like.
so would it have been a Dodge Travco? What else looked similar?

I recall the GMC was bad about the “leans” after a few years, used to see several in driveways in the 70’s with one side down.

I had a 91 Toronado Burgundy on Burgundy and loved that car. Super comfortable and rode like a dream. I didn’t know until the video that the GMC had the Toronado engine and drivetrain.
The GMC is the only motorhome I’ve seen with one wheel behind the other. Why didn’t other companies go that direction do you think? It’s funny how boxy the Winny was by comparison?
I really enjoyed the video, it was a good time to be around!

Harry,, You might be able to trade for one “heads up” if your lucky. I’ll start looking for ya. I’m looking at trading for a 1991 Ford Econoline Van myself. Gotta wear Him down as He wants too much diff.

Hey Glen, Make sure that “1991 Ford Econoline Van” has three on the tree. You remember the one with the clutch?
I remember the first standard transmission I rented in San Francisco and that stop sign on top of the hill. Before I got my feet in the right places I rolled back 75 yards into the bay!

Hi Mark, That video is terrific! The contrast is really something isn’t it? So why not the four wheel configuration of the GMC with airbags vs the truck chassis with tandem wheels?
Has anyone ridden in the GMC, what was it like?

Our first RV was a 23′ GMC Glacier and we loved it… had a Smiley Face wheel cover on the rear that said HAPPY DAYS !!
We loved the drive and ride then soon went up to a 26′ Royale never had any issues with them… just like driving a car.
We had a third one we took in trade on a Newell we were selling and it sold like a hot cake… they were very popular.. looked great.. cheap to maintain and rode like a dream.

Wow Diane what a terrific post! You were posting the same time I was and that is really something you had three of them. I’ll bet that video did take you to the “Good old Days”! How great to have that kind of good to remember experiences.
