  • Eco Cool AC units

Posted by Jamey on June 16, 2024 at 7:08 am

I finally put the Eco Cool Ac units on the Prevost Coach. It was really not that that difficult to do this project. We measured and cut the holes, ran the power and then shored up the openings. I took the time to tape all of the holes and then rented a lift to put them on the coach. Wired them in and finished mounting the lower controls. 3 hours to cut the 4 holes, 2.5 hours to pull the wiring, 6 hours to shore up and tape the holes and 7 hours to mount and wire in the units. I chose to use the manual controls and glad that I did. These units are extremely quite and the only thing you hear is the air flow. With all 4 units running they only pull about 24 amps. It was 92 the day we installed the units and the cooled the coach great! Time will tell how the hold up but they will be easy to change verses the cruise airs! Note: we used a grinder with a cut off wheel to cut the holes on top and a multi isolating tool to cut thru the wood and mirrored plastic. We wired the AC units to the control panel as well. Yes there was some sweat involved and I am glad this project is done!! The overall coach height is 13 feet 3.5 inches in case you wanted to know.

Great job! I did similar with 3 Penguin II 15,000 BTU. Same process as you did. How did you handle the condensate? Mike

I just let it free flow. It will flows to the channel of the coach and goes to the ground. I thought about pluming it to the waste tanks but it was so hot and I may address this at a later date.

How far do these hang down? Head clearance a problem?

They are 3 inches from the ceiling. I still have plenty of clearance.

Nice job, i just wrapped up a 3500 mile road trip to 7 states out here in the West. Our last night was in Las Vegas 115 degrees, my 3 Dometic Penguins kept the bus 75 degrees no problem.

We cut the holes in the roof, ran the cables to the control panel and then shored up the holes and installed the units. Note: the bolts that came with the units were to short so I used all thread with a nut to hold the units in place. It is really not that hard to install them and I used the manual controls to keep things simple. I removed a puck light and put my scope in the opening to see what I was dealing with before we cut the holes. If you decide to do this be careful when you are cutting the holes. As you see in my photos there were a lot of wires where we cut the holes.

How did you know you were between steel roof bows? or are the location shown on Prevost info?

I put my coach outside in the sun for a few hours and was able to see the ribs.

I used a magnet. The bows are steel and the roof skin is aluminum. There are diagrams of the specific bows (and everything else) for each particular bus on the Prevost parts assist web site – which I found useful for planning my approach to putting my roof airs on. As has been noted, proceed slowly due to wires, etc in ceiling. For one roof air I was able to run a bow through the middle of the unit to make the location work. Fishing the power wires and condensate lines – which I tagged into the condensate lines of the cruisairs – is fun. Supplemental roof support should be added and there are various ways to do that – some simpler than others. Drop me a note if you have questions or need more info. Mike

How and where did you run power wires?

Yes they only pull around 6 amps and less than 800 watts. These things are amazing! We had temps of 95 and I only had to run 3 of them to keep the coach cool.
