Jeff,
Yes and no to your question about removing the HGB.
You can’t just remove the HGB valve by simply unscrewing it. On the system I showed in the picture (I’m assuming most of the Cruisairs are similar) You’d need to cut it out and then crimp, then braze the ends shut. I think this is the easiest method. The reason for this is one of the pressure switches hangs off of the same line, so you can’t simply remove the whole thing.
Obviously if one is removing the HGB, then you’re already having issues with your system and the r22 is likely completely leaked out or you evacuated it prior to this work.
There is no reason to go into a working system and remove the HGB as it would require removing the unit (which likely requires complete refrigerant removal) just to get access to it.
Why mess with a working system? But, if you’re fixing a broken one, then it makes sense

Jeff – the hot gas bypass valve must be cut out / completely removed which will require adding a new threaded stem to be soldered in to accommodate the pressure switch. In mine it was also required to crimp the piece of tubing going to the HGBV and solder it closed. Wish I had taken photos to better illustrate.

Thanks so much guys. I will take a closer look at it with the info provided and see if we can wrap our heads around it.

Thanks Hidden,
I will check out the connections once I figure out how to get to them. Of course it has to be the unit that is near impossible to get any of the covers/panels off.

For the person asking where I got the AKA5512EXA’s from. I got them from here.

Jeff,
When the HGBV was removed on your unit, do you know if the condenser blower motor thermostat was left on or removed? It’s connected to the high pressure line right next to the HGBV. Mine has some thermal paste on it as well. I can’t find any information on it’s specific use and logic behind it’s purpose. I plan on leaving it, for now.
Thanks.

Hidden – I do not recall seeing what you reference…
My CA unit was built in either late 2005 or early 2006. Wonder if my vintage of unit had it….just do not know.

Updates on my situation
2 units work.
1. unit worked, and appears the brazed in valve popped a leak or the schrader valve failed and leaked out all the r22. That unit is now sitting at 126psi with nitrogen in it to see if it will hold pressure.
2. Took off the covers of the cruise air that wont work. Pressure is staying the same on high and low. Turned on and all the wiring is showing the correct voltage and amps. Turned on the heat to see if it was maybe a valve stuck, and it was not. I will be buying a 12000 compressor and have that installed this weekend I think. No real way around this, the bus just doesnt stay cold enough with 3 units.

Update, new compressor ordered. Hope to have it installed this weekend.
