Success, I installed four fresh group 31s. Fired the engine up and everything looks ok…..or hopefully so. I did not install the charger and will leave it to a warmer day….-2c here in Langley BC.

Jon, I believe that Tom’s comments were related to the chassis batteries and I just piggy backed on his response. Is it typical to have the coaches’ chassis batteries charged by the generator?

Most “smart” chargers are typically designated as such because they have 3 or more charging states and not because they can never make a mistake if they are misapplied. Before using the charger differently than how the instructions designate I would contact the manufacturer of the charger for their recommendations. I did, and they absolutely said not to have the charger charging the batteries while the alternator is also charging the batteries. This is a high quality “Smart” marine charger with a 5 stage charging profile and a 5 year warranty. Can you buy a charger for the chassis batteries than can be left on while charging through the alternator? Perhaps, but you best do your homework to make sure that it is designed to be used in that type of application.

This is just my opinion but the charging of the house batteries is an entirely different animal and should probably not be intermixed with discussions regarding the charging of the chassis batteries. With the house system you can have charging from the alternator, generator, shore power, solar and who knows where else (some coaches are now using dc generators) and they can all work in harmony if properly designed.

My remarks regarding two charging sources was to point out we have multiple times when more than one device is charging the same set of batteries.

With respect to the specific comments the coaches I am familiar with do not have the chassis batteries being charged when the generator is running unless the circuit for the chassis battery charger is turned on.
