Aqua Hot coach heat stopped working last night again!

Since the tech was here 2 weeks ago, hot water has been working fine, and we didn’t use the heat until last night when it got frightully cold, down into the 40’s here in Florida. It stopped blowing warm air at 2 am so I just shut it down. There was no hot water either.

Checked it this morning and found overflow canister was empty, took a little less than a quart to refill everything. I reset the popped circuit breaker inside the unit and fired it up, we have hot water again.

What puzzles me is the loss of coolant in the system, there is obviously a leak somewhere which causes the breaker to trip when it reaches a certain level of low coolant, I am just wondering how to go about finding the leak in the Aqua Hot system?

I don’t have an Aquahot, but there is a little voice in my head that keeps saying if it ain’t dripping on the ground, it is leaking somewhere inside the coach.

Given my options I always want to see it dripping on the ground rather than leaking inside the house or bays.

I totally agree with you Jon. There are 3 heat zones with this system, perhaps I should turn them on one by one and check for leaks that way, then I can perhaps isolate the leaking section……… unless someone has a better idea.

    Georges,

For a while I was watching the coolant level slowly (over months) go down. Not long ago I turned on my Webasto for a cold night and it shut down after a short while. Turning it off for the night, the next morning I discovered a small puddle under the coach and sure enough it was coolant!

It turns out that the circulation pump was leaking slightly even though it was not in use. Turning on the Webasto was the final touch and the shaft seal let go enough to cause the puddle.

I suggest you find the circulation pump and exam it for drips.

By the way, my coach has a single circulation loop and the “zones”, controlled by separate themostats, only control the fans on the individual fan/coil units. Therefore, shutting off the separate thermostats doesn’t reduce the circulation to any particular part of the coach.

    Hope this helps….

    Georges,

Since the Aqua-Hot is a closed system, you should be able to find the leak. You need to check not only the circulation pumps, but also each heat exchanger in the coach, the hoses running to the engine and the bay heat exchanger. If you don’t find any leaks there, the other possiblity is inside the enclosed box itself. The coolant could be laying in the bottom of the enclosure soaked up in the insulation. I suppose once it got saturated enough, it could start coming out somewhere.

Well, it was working fine for a couple of days….. I kept checking the coolant level and it was within normal limits on the canister, but now that same breaker inside the box has tripped again!

One re-occuring event when I turn the boiler on is the strong smell of diesel in the Aqua Hot bay as well as inside the coach but to a lesser extent, so I am thinking that it must be leaking inside the boiler ?

Have the same Aqua Hot model in my coach. Diesel smell kept getting worse over a couple years until it was leaking out from bottom of Aqua Hot and running on ground. Replaced fuel lines as they had been on coach since build. Diesel smell got worse. Come to find out they was a problem with old fuel pump leaking on old models. Ironhorse RV in San Antone replaced pump with new style and R&R’ed system and no more diesel smell.

    Georges,

So you’re losing coolant and have diesel smell? One problem area as Glens pointed out is the fuel pump, but also the banjo fittings on the fuel lines. I had the smell also and had to replace the copper washers on the banjo fittings. The fuel lines connecting to the banjo fittings also get real brittle and can leak. Mine had fuel dripping out under the case where the fuel lines go in to the pump. With a fuel leak, diesel runs everywhere and can get soaked up in the insulation inside the Aqua-Hot.
