Day#3 Radiator at shop awaiting core. Rad shop guy told the diesel shop service manager that due to the thickness of the Prevost radiator, he had to special order the core.

Dan Hilger called me from Mesa, AZ (where we were supposed to be). He recored the radiator in his form 94 Prevost and was supportive of my decision to recore. He also explained to me the mechanics of the belt tightener, the gear box, the fan clutch, the fan, the fan belt tightener, and the tightner stop. I now have a better understanding of how that works and will be able to better look for whatever is “wrong”.

In theory, the belt tightner stop bracket should keep the fan and fan clutch from making contact with the radiator brace and ultimately the radiator. But it didn’t. I suspect something has “moved”.

Part of future pre-trip inspections will be to release the air in the fan belt tightner bags, pushing the belt tightener against the stop, spinning the fan, and inspecting for clearance.

    Day#4

There was fin damage from apparent corrosion we couldn’t see until the radiator was out of the coach and separated from the CAC in addition to the shrapnel damage we could see.

According the radiator guy, the rest of the radiator components are in good shape and good candidates for recoring. Hopefully we’ll get the recored radiator back early next week.

Just a suggestion…while the radiator is out, take this opportunity to clean, sand and repaint the area where it’s mounted. You’ll be glad you did.

Dick, you have flex in the assemblies that hold the clutch and fan. The travel is determined by the belt stretch, the flexing of the assemblies and by how much your motor rocks and that is impacted by a lot of things including the condition of the motor mounts. When you shut the motor down or go from coasting or retarder application to full power the torque moves the engine. Shutting the engine off moves the engine.

I do not think you can assess full travel because there is so many potential places that impact travel you are stuck with doing what is required to further limit travel since you appear to have excess travel now.

    Linda or John,

That cleaned up nicely. Did you R&R your radiator yourself? Seems like it would be a straight forward process. Was it? Thanks

Yes, it is very straight forward (actually pretty simple) if you make a plan. However, it did take me a little longer than expected and I wouldn’t attempt it without a tractor/loader or a fork lift. I found a step by step “go by” on line (in PDF) and will email it to you if you send me your email address. Go for it!

Jeff, for some reason I can’t send you an email. Are you sure you’re email link is active?

I will try to help some future rad problem that owners may have. OTR trucks often get new aftermarket rads. There are at least 3 companies in the USA that mfr. rads. Being as a Prevost is a bus these companies may make a rad that will fit. Perhaps one of the Bus lines will have that information. usually 30 or 40% cheaper than OEM. You can find the names of the Rad mfrs. in those free papers at the truck stops.

If you are talking about the belt tensioner bellows use the rd handled valve at the top center of the engine door opening.

OK…the jury is out on new radiator or re-core using old tanks.

    BTW..whats the warranty on the re-core ?
