The consequences of such extremely overfilling on a Series 60 could be physical damage from a rapidly moving piston trying to force its way through oil on the downstroke. While it wouldn’t be hydraulic lock because the excess oil would likely try to travel beneath a piston on the upstroke the potential could be broken connecting rod bolts for example because they were not designed to handle forces such as would be generated by pulling forces. Once they broke it likely wouldn’t be long before a connecting rod gets bent or broken followed by holes in the block.

The two stroke engines such as the 8V92 however would easily get hydraulic lock. The air intake on those engines is a series of slots at the bottom of the cylinder liner so once those were filled with oil the upstroking piston would be stopped with the hydraulic lock Al describes and that could possibly be the end of the engine. That would happen in a few seconds.

Bottom line: fill your engine to the proper level.

Are you sure the crankshaft splashes the oil around the crankcase? I would think that would foam up the oil and aerate the oil. I would have thought that internal oil pump would have circulated the oil through all the oil galleys and nooks and crannies.

Without going into all the if, ans, and but’s….. just keeping it simple.

I was trying to get accross a basic explanation on how his engine could hold so much extra oil and what might happen if the engine had started.

Thank God they did not put 35 gallons in my coach, but I just pulled my dip stick after a Level 2 service here in Mira Loma and the oil is about 1 inch above the full mark (an extra gallon?). You can see more in my Love/Hate post.
