fried inverter
Posted by Chas on June 26, 2018 at 5:51 pmSo had a bad storm that fried one of my inverters. Is there a way to isolate it so it’s not allowing power through and allow the generator to feed power to the house directly?

Thought it was yours Tom when I read the thread header.
Interested in what caused this and if it can be avoided … Other than avoiding running over 33amp on each trace inverter which could burn them out.

Trying to sort out what happened for sure. Will post once we are able to verify what happened to these units.

Joe Carter figured out what happened. He says all electrical wires and components have smoke inside them. I think what happened was the smoke escaped.

all electronic gear runs on compressed smoke. Don’t let the smoke out.

Joe Carter must have sat next to Colt most of the seminar.

Only part time, Jon double my dues and I had to move so Colt could not get me into any more trouble.

Charles,
I know nothing about a Liberty but when my inverter failed and was sent for repair, I connected the AC power input to the inverter, directly to the AC output from the inverter therefore bypasing the inverter and its transfer switch completely. You have to disconnect them to remove the inverter for repair ( as well as the DC connection from the house batts). By connecting the AC input/output you have the breaker protection still in place and the wire wire should be the same. You will be feeding your inverter circuits just like when you are on shore power.

Bypass switch?where would that be, and can I run the generator with it?

I have a nice surge guard that is now dead. Working on getting a progressive ind one to replace it.

Charles, your vintage Liberty had no provision to bypass a failed inverter. On my 97 I had to create a by-pass so I could still get generator or shore power past the inverters to those circuits on the inverter.
I do not have the schematics or photos I don’t think but they went with all the documentation and log books when I sold the bus. If you permit me to provide your emial address to the current owner of that bus I will send it to him and ask him if there is a way he could make that information available to you if you want to do an inverter by-pass system. It involved a bunch of rewiring and some switches but when I had the system in place I was able to supply power to important things like the refrigerator and outlets as long as the coach had shore or generator power.

Made it to ETLC and jeff checked things out, and decided that things looked good. Swapped out the fried inverter, brought it all back up and seems everything is working fine now.
Couple more things I learned from this.
On the liberty setup, I could have shut down the inverters, started the generator and been able to run my AC’s rather then sleeping in a sweat box.
Could have also done what others mentioned and unwired the inverter(s) and wired the power/coach sides together and by-passed the inverter(s). Of course doing all that in a downpour wasnt going to happen. But good to know if I ever find myself in a situation where I need to do it (or build a by-pass setup with a switch like Jon/Tom mentioned).
