Chassis Battery Charger
I was told about Prevost Community in December 2011 by Bob Glines when I was looking for help in knowing whatever I needed to know about changing chassis batteries. You all have been a big help in many areas since then.
I have come full circle and I may be changing those batteries again. I replaced the 4 group 31 batteries then with private label “seconds.” An acquaintance owns the battery company and I happened to be in his area when I needed batteries. He often has batteries he can not sell as new because they have set on the shelf too long or they have been sold and returned. He tests them and sells them at a discounted price. The discount on mine was 100% so I am not too disappointed that they are showing weakness at 2 years and 9 months.
They have only shown that weakness twice and both times I had not started the bus in atleast a week and my 12v and 24v disconnects were not in the off position for at least part of that time.
The second time (last week) the battery charger acted a little hesitant but I did get enough charge to crank. I checked the charger this week and it is working off and on or not at all. It has been mounted on top of the batteries next to the engine for nearly 20 years so I am surprised it has lasted this long. That is assuming it is original.
With the cover.
Without the cover.
This charger is a plug in model and I manually put the leads on the two main post down on the side below the disconects.
I have four questions.
1. Should I replace it with a similar model?
2. If so, where’s the best place to order and have it shipped to me?
3. Should I consider a different type of charger? I imagine there have been some advances in technology in 20 years. Please assume I know nothing about chargers and you will be close to correct.
4. IF a different type charger is recommended should I consider hard wiring the charging leads so all I need to do is plug it in or turn on a breaker? Bonus Question: IF I do that, where do I tie in specifically?
Thanks for your help. Changing the batteries is in the near future but I would like to resolve the charger issue now before I am stuck high and dry.
