Clearing Engine Codes
Posted by Archived on May 8, 2014 at 10:29 pmBet you didn’t know this, but you can diagnose, view and clear engine codes yourself with the Information Center in the 2000 and up Prevosts. Yep, you don’t need no stinking reader. Of course you want to get the problem repaired first, then clear the codes.
I can’t believe Jon hasn’t yet pointed this out, he’s slipping…

Tom,
I am still in Colberg and we haven’t tackled the code issue i got on the way… can you shed some light on the process to view the codes… is it just go to the dianostic menu? I have a menu item that says faults…that was showing no faults yesterday… I will check it out in the morning when I pull in…
Thanks
Bill

I knew about this from my issues with the faulty VPOD’s last fall. I was able to clear some, but not all of the codes that were getting thrown when I had that issue. I suspect there are some that still need the computer / reader to be cleared out…..

I never knew that, or even thought about it because I have had DDEC III and DDEC V readers for my last two coaches.
Now that Truk has revealed that, perhaps he will tell us the step by step process.

Go to Diagnostics
Select Password
Enter 0000
Go to Engine
Clear all codes

Tom,
Can you post the details on just reading the any fault codes. Not clearing them?
Thanks
Bill

Bill,
Just go to diagnostics, then select engine and any codes will be listed. Mine had two that were “inactive”, so I cleared those.

Truk,
Thanks.. I think I got it to work… but Leon at Marathon arranged for me to swing the bus by Pacific power down the street and they hooked me up to the DD diagnostic Link and found 3 fault codes.
May 26, 2013 one count of Air inlet temp high
Then the other two engine power derate due to intake manifold temp and VNT vanes not responding – EGR were between 255 and 454. I just had the CAC replaced in Mira Loma which the tech here said would be consistent with the codes I was receiving… Unfortunately, Prevost didn’t check and clear the codes… so we have no real way of seeing if they were current or from before the CAC replacement.
Then with the use of the laptop they were able to activate the VNT vanes and something else that I forgot what they called it but something moved up and down and they said everything was working as it should…
So for now… I think we are going to go with it.
They cleared the codes and this way if anything shows up I know it will be current.

Was going to start another thread but hope its ok to piggyback on this one.
I was able to play around with the DDEC pro driver a little bit, but am wondering is there another way besides a Scan Gauge D or using the iPad app for the RV dash to get good ECM data and clear codes?
I assume there is no OBD port, just the J1939 interface?
Do the 2000 up Prevosts give you EGT’s or do you need to install a pyrometer if you want to feed that data to the ECM? ( or can you feed it to ECM?)
-
Why would you need EGTs? On our coaches there isn’t a single thing we can do from the driver’s seat to control them except to step on the gas or lift off the gas. We have no control of the factors that control EGT such as fuel / air ratio, timing, etc.

G-man, Silver Leaf makes a PC based interface all the at up to a glass dash. Amongst other features, it will store fault codes and display them in easy to understand text.
I know pre EGR engines don’t have pyrometer probes. If they did you could read them through a Silver Leaf product. The closest to EGT my engine has is air intake temperature.

Thanks guys, I am looking towards the future in regards to EGT, I realize on the stock tune with the Detroit you can probably not hurt anything but I am considering adding power later to increase MPG as I have done I on my current rig.
Right now I use an old Edge tuner to monitor boost, EGT, ECT, and % of load. I tuned it with EFI Live, picked up over a MPG adding around 60 HP but in certain situations like big hills you need to back out of it as EGT’s will get up there. Especially when towing heavy.
Gil I saw your setup and looked at the SilverLeaf site, that may be the solution, I liked how you have the ability to do multiple things in your dash, like back up camera etc.
I wanted to use somthing like Torque for Android but they do not yet support J1939, Silverleaf does but with Windows…my hope was to maybe mount a tablet and have it do multiple things, monitor gauges, GPS, and dash cam, looks like this may work with a Windows tablet and VMSpc from Silverleaf!

Using the computer to activate the VNT vanes makes the VPOD send air to the acuator on the bottom of the turbo. Hope your VPOD works ok as I went through 3 reman units last October to get one that works…I was sitting at a Detroit dealer for almost 2 weeks for them to finally find and fix it.
I see the inlet air temp to high sometimes when climbing bigger hills. Seems to be common with our setup. The folks at Prevost said not to worry about it and my Detroit dealer didn’t seem concerned either. I just clear them out.

Mark,
Does the new CAC help with less high temp readings ? Or should I say none leaking ?
With CAC replacement I have noticed improved preformance. How about you. ?
