  • Safety While Traveling

    All,

I do not know how many of you have seen the reports of the number of over-the-road truck drivers that are being ambushed. A friend from GA sent me a note this morning about this subject. She said that a female driver was beaten to death by thugs. They threw something at her rig. She called her husband and said she thought she had hit someone, or something, and was pulling over. She and her husband had been driving as a couple for many years before health occurred for him. So she was driving solo.

She pulled over to check what had happened. Thugs beat her to death on the side of the road.

My friend said that she had been reading a lot about these types of incidents. You think you hit someone or something, pull over, and they attack you.

Please, all of us, be aware of our surroundings, and be ready to defend yourself. I could see Coach Operators and private Coach Owners being targeted, too.

    God Speed.

There are a lot of precautions we all should take because we are potential targets. Obviously we need to be aware of our surroundings and never leave the coach unless we are sure it will be safe.

If needed be willing to use the coach to bully your way to safety. Someone with a car that blocks you in is a threat, but a toothless threat because if need be our coaches will push almost anything with wheels out of the way.

Be aware of your location and able to tell 911 where you are, preferably by mile marker or intersection.

When all else fails you all know the next option.

Was recently at Walter D’Andrea for some paint touch up. The conversation about the safety of a Prevost came up. As most know Walter specializes in Prevost mostly motorhomes but also seated charter busses too. He said over the years he has done many repairs from thugs trying to get inside the bus or cargo bays with crowbars etc. He said there was always costly damage to the bus but seldom were the thugs actually able to get in the bus or cargo bays.
That provided some comfort to me. If nothing else it buys you time to drive away

Years ago my dad told me a story about when he was traveling through down town LA when the LA riots were going on,He didn’t realize he was in a bad area, he stopped at a stop light, he said there was not many people on the streets then and this big guy put his hand on dad’s drivers window frame and gave him the look! and dad always carried a long barrel 45 next to his seat and dad raised the barrel high enough where the guy could see it, and the guy took his hand off the window frame and backed off, and dad drove away. Could have been bad but his friend Smith & Wesson saved the day.

Bad things usually happen when a gun is involved and I hope all of us prefer to move the bus to a safe spot, even if it means to push against other vehicles and move them out of the way.

However it is understandable if left with no choice a gun may have to be a part of staying safe.

Dad he was a Texan, and when necessary you can protect yourself and family. I’m not a gun person, Don’t like guns much but I do carry a 9mm in a lock box in the bus and only once I took it out just in case. In Lordsburg New Mexico

I bet a lot of Prevost owners carry some kind of Gun in their buses??

We learned a long time ago almost every Prevost is equipped with some form of protection. It could range from mace stored and accessible near the entry door, to a shotgun that sounds very impressive as a round is racked into the firing chamber, to handguns.

Handguns are illegal in a lot of places regardless of if you have a concealed carry permit in your home state so some caution has to be observed. I am not aware of any restrictions on long guns, and it is my personal opinion a shotgun racked and pointed at an intruder will have a very significant impact on all but the dumbest or most drug crazed individuals.

Diane and I took our concealed carry permit this past weekend. Now we need to find a Glock. Guns and ammo are scarce nowadays. The cop who gave the course said our Florida permit is recognized in 48 states. He said don’t carry in NY.

    What is concealed gun insurance?

Check out: Firearms Legal Protection for insurance.

I bought a Walther CCP 380 automatic Pistol to carry in the coach. Not a 9mm but easy to rack for a woman and still deadly.

I have vowed never to Stay in a State that deprives me of my 2nd amendment. You can transverse a State without stopping and carry the gun in a locked container without access to the passengers, (a lot of good that does when you need it). But Calif., New York, and Mass. are the worst States and should be avoided. I do. Michael

Mark, I think your trainer missed the target by a few feet:

Thanks for that Chad. The cop who gave the course may have missed the target on that info but judging by his physique he hasn’t missed too many donut shops in his career. LOL

    Mark,

I believe you have a typo in your post. I believe it is honored in 38 states, not 48.

We all have a gun with the hope we don’t have to use it. But if you do have to defend yourself. by all means get firearm insurance. It gives you $$ protection and a lawyer specializing in gun cases!
