Yellowstone Advice
Been 20 years since we’ve been there and then on the Harley, so what’s my best route to Cody from West Yellowstone? South loop past Old Faithful and 20,000 Asians seems the best.

I think thru Canyon would be faster but in Yellowstone maybe longer is better.
The perfect person to respond would be someone who drove buses there for 15 years. I bet you can find one.

WY to Norris Geyser Basin is 36 miles. About 1h
Norris to Canyon Village 12 miles. About 20-30 min
Csnyon Village to Cody via Fishing Bridge 93 miles 2 1/2 hours
OR
OfI to West Thumb 18 miles
West Thumb to Fishing Bridge turn 24 miles about 45 min Follow shore of Yellowstone Lake
Fishing Bridge turn to Cody Wy 82 miles About 2 hrs
if you haven’t seen the lake which is 22 miles long and 14 miles wide Nice drive
if you haven’t seen bison then Canyon to Fshing Bridge passes thru The Hayden Valley and your near Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone which has water falls 109 ft and 308 ft access by side dead end roads
the 18 miles from oFI to West Thumb is in the trees Then the lake area is stunning
headibg north from Madison Jct from west Yell is 14 miles south is 33 to ofI Follows Firehole River. turning north from Madison is the better route I would say this time of year. Since EVERYONE heads to Old Faithful. Mileage wise your closer to Fishing Bridge turn to Cody via Norris and Canyon. Can beat either direction. If you haven’t seen the Lake Hotel ther is area for bus parking behind the yellow color hotel circa 1889. It’s on north shore Then you can double back 3 miles and head to Cody. Be sure in Cody to see Buffalo Bill museum. Fantastic art and Remington firearm collection From Cody head to Thermopolis and south to Cheyenne to I-80 and beyond unless your seeing Black Hills the skirt the Big Horns south towards Greybull to Buffalo and I-90 east then you’ll see Elkhorn Resort we all stayed in 2007

Any direction through the park will be slow this time of year. Through Fishing Bridge is a beautiful drive, hilly, curvy and slow.
Check with the Yellowstone web site to see where any road construction is going on and avoid that at all cost. Some times the wait can be up to 30 min.

We were out that way a couple of years ago. In Cody, we stayed at the Ponderosa Campground (ran into Mike & Karen Davis there). Wherever you stay, if you have time, take a ride in your toad up SR120 to SR296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Hwy) and go all the way to Beartooth Pass. Then we turned around and looked at it again. It’s worth the ride. It’s not a short drive what with stopping to photograph, etc. so snacks & beverages are good to have on hand.

Charles Kuralt said the Bear Tooth Pass was the most scenic drive in America and he saw a lot of them. I heard him say that when I was a boy and never forgot it. I have now driven it a few times and it is beautiful!

We did the Beartooth many years ago on the Harley in August, snow on top and back in the carb days, throttle wide open just to get over the top heading to Red Lodge.

Did you actually take the bus through the pass? Map shows a lot of switchbacks.

No, not suitable for the bus.

Drove the Absarokee Loop, Beartooth Highway, and Chief Joseph Scenic Highway about two weeks ago. None are suitable for the bus, but all are well worth the time. It may not look like it, but you can get a pretty good ‘Americano’ at the Fishtail General Store.
