  • Wiring confusion

Posted by Bill on November 24, 2023 at 4:23 pm

Pulling apart a lighting circuit with 2 dimmer switches controlling wall sconces. The circuit also has all the wall plugs on that side of the coach. So, coming into the box are 3 wires bundles. The 3 grounds are connected together, the hots are wires together and the 3 neutrals confuse me. One is split to connect to to both dimmers. The second is connected to one dimmer but that dimmer has only one port which receives both neutrals. The 3rd neutral is connected to a 2nd port on that dimmer. I have attached a drawing and a picture of the backs of the 2 dimmers. I am trying to install 2 modern LED dimmers but can’t figure out how to wire them. It seems like I would need to wire one neutral to each dimmer with a jumper between the 2 or something to that effect. Let me know if anyone has any thoughts.

    Thanks.

I am assuming that this is a 120v circuit. The black wire is the hot wire on 120v circuits, the white wire is neutral. The black wire that is connected to the two black wires going into the dimmer switches is the supply to the dimmers. The other black wires coming out of the dimmers go to the lights. Both dimmers operate the same, the difference is one has both the in and out wires going through the same hole, the other one has separate holes. Just a difference in design on the dimmers.

Yes, 120V. Thanks for the info. That will make the new dimmers a simple swap. The dimmer with 2 wires in one hole threw me off. I was also wrong about which was the hot wire so that guidance is also appreciated.

Do yourself a favor and flip the breaker for that branch circuit off.

Thanks again. The new dimmers install solved the LED flicker problems. 5 minutes per switch and all’s well.
