  • Wipers stopped working……in a downpour!

Posted by Georges on August 22, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Taking my coach to that foggy window repair place in Hudson Florida today, as we turned off I-75 onto SR-52 it started to rain hard, I turned the wipers on and they worked for about 6 wipes then stopped!

There was absolutely not place to pull over for 8 miles, as it is just a 2 lane road and there was traffic in both directions, I could not just stop in the middle of the highway, so I kept going with flashers on at 35 mph in a 55 zone. The whole time I was thinking about the Ice road truckers show and what they put up with! Finally arrived there safely.

I thought the wipers sounded weird when I turned them on as they were hitting hard on the outside stop of the stroke. After I finally pulled over, I forced them both inward a little by hand, when I turned the wiper switch on again, they worked 2 strokes and stopped again. I wonder if they are just out of adjustment and if so, where do I adjust them?

Mine stopped suddenly after a couple knocks and a bang. Shattered gearbox! A mounting bolt backed out and was hit by the actuator arm. Suggest you check the bolts.

Keep a spray bottle of Rain-X handy. Best insurance against busted wipers there is.

Mine would do this till I adjusted them. They are going to far around the curve in the outer edges of the windshields. To adjust them, carefully remove the crown nut that is on each wipers motor shaft and while holding the wiper blade away from the windshield pull it off the shaft. May have trouble removing from the shaft as they tend to corrode or oxidize and stick and also holding the wiper away from the windshield will take some of the spring tension off the shaft. If there stuck put some liquid wrench on them or some WD 40 or some kind of lube that will go down in the splines of the shaft.

Note waht position you removed each one and reinstall each arm a little closer to the center post between the windshields.

(Wind screens as the British would say)

Yes, I bought a can of Rain X that afternoon! Haven’t had a chance to pull them off and try adjusting yet.

sometimes our air system gets sticky(dry) I have put puematic oil : lube like you use in air tools;a few drops in supply line and done wonders for air wipers and norgen valves(sticking/slugish). They simply dry out and accumilate a little corrision over time. Like a air tool . Cured my 89 wipers. Bob

The people in Hudson were very efficient and accomodating as can be. They have decent parking/plug-ins, free while you have your windows fixed, but we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Spring Hill, just about 5 miles away.

They could only fix the driver’s side window, as the one just behind it is curved and they cannot fix curved windows……..I only wish they would have told me this when I called to make an appointment and told them exactly which 2 windows needed to be fixed!.

They charged me $250 for the driver’s window and I am pleased with their work.

Now if only Port Charlotte RV had done as good a job on my OTR I would be really happy….. it worked for a couple of days then started blowing hot again and this is after 9 days in the shop and $3500!

I called them yesterday, they said: “bring it back we will make it right”……..why could they not have done it right the first time!!! Now I have to waste more time!!! And supposedly the owner of this RV place used to own a “fleet” of Prevosts and knows all about them!
