window defogging
Posted by Archived on January 14, 2015 at 9:11 pmA while ago there was some discussion about the competence of a certain glass place in hudson florida. I mention this because at the super show today in Tampa I was in the lazydays booth and noticed the banner saying that lazy days does defog windows. After talking to a young woman about it and being reassured that they dont just send the job up to hudson and that they have been doing this work for some time now i got the card of a mike Riddle.specialty shop manager 813-246-4999×4476.Hope this helps

The reason windows fog is because the seal between the two layers of glass fails. Once there is a path for air to enter and exit the space between panes the window will “breathe”. When the sun is beating on the window the gas inside the two layers of glass expands, and as it cools the gas shrinks. So the internal gas leaks out while it is heated, and it is drawn back in when it cools.
Over time the internal gas, usually argon, but it can be any dry gas such as nitrogen, is replaced with the atmosphere which in addition to oxygen and nitrogen has moisture (humidity). As more air is drawn in and out of the glass sandwich more and more moisture is retained through condensation.
To repair fogged windows two things must happen. The moisture has to be removed. That can be done by pulling a vacuum between the two layers, and when the moisture has evaporated and been drawn out a moisture free gas needs to be added between the layers. Then the seal between the two layers of glass has to be repaired.
It is not a big deal doing this. Sometimes the best approach is to separate the two glass layers, clean the glass surfaces and then reseal the two layers of glass, and replace whatever air is between the layers with argon. The problem is if the fogging has gone on for a while sometimes the glass layers are damaged by etching. Everytihng can be repaired, but if the windows are etched they will never be as clear as new glass.
If the fogging can be repaired properly that is an excellent option, but before I went ahead with that I would want to understand exactly how the repair will be made because the long term success is totally dependent on a proper repair.

I am a former customer of Lazy Days and I have experience with their service department. I also have had experience with that portion of their service department that performs interior rennovations. I would expect that their window repair department would exhibit the same level of competence.
There is no way I would let them work on my coach.

Double K’s experience seems to be the norm at LD, I won’t be going there…. While we were there for our rally, we talkied to a few people that had been there for a month and heard horror stories.

Taking your Bus over there would be like taking your Peterbilt to a Chevy dealer.

I was merely passing on information not endorsing anyone. There was a few complaints about hudson so I thought an alternative might be helpful.
