Roger and Micki … its OK. For now I think you and Jon can continue to use and enjoy your coaches without knowing what it means. But down the road a ways, its difficult to predict.

It’s hard to keep up with technology. I remember when a 4 track tape player was a great option in a car. The life span of that feature was a little more than the average life span of an iphone so in my world I’m past the point of keeping track of the latest and greatest because next week this thread will be talking about something else.

Roger, the Long-Term Evolution is the industry nomenclature attached to today’s cellular 4G service. When mobile phones first came out, they were the “bag” style phones, that were designed for voice with analog protocols (1G or first generation). Then the industry came up with “brick” phones also for voice but with improved capacity and bringing in the first digital standards (2G or second generation). Then 3G (third generation) came along with the first mobile broadband for multimedia, text and Internet. Now the latest is 4G (fourth generation) designed primarily for data — that LTE-4G “smartphone” is really a little computer with a phone app. With each generation, there have been improvements in speed, capacity and coverage. Jon’s eyes have glazed over by now….

Thanks to Linda for a clear explanation. I can’t speak for Jon, but I’m a smarter person tonight than I was earlier today!
I always thought that 4G stood for a 4 gigabytes (or maybe gigabits) data transfer rate. I’ve been enlightened.

I guess I am in 1G or maybe 2G status. It will be a while at the speed I am going to get to 4G or beyond.
Drives people crazy when they learn my phone is mostly not turned on. Drives them crazier when they realize I have no voice mail, or the ability to get text messages.
It drives me crazier still when I see people who are supposed to be doing something else (like driving or eating with friends) playing with their phone, so it evens out.

Well, as of December of this year 2G is gone. It is called sunset of 2G I think. It goes away. A lot of alram systems have to be upgraded to 3G or beyond. We a re upating ours, this is how I became aware of this.

We use a MAXXFI device that we inserted a T-Mobile phone card into.
It is basically a Hot Spot, but can use phone SIM cards or park WIFI as source.
Our T-Mobile account is unlimited data, so the MAXXFI gives us unlimited WIFI for our TV, iPhones, iPads etc.
We usually have over 200GB usage per month, but with unlimited data, it does not matter.
I am going to look into the AT&T unlimited plan as well since the MAXXFI will take 2 SIM cards.
We have used it from Jacksonville, FL to San Francisco, CA and have found very few places that T-Mobile did not have service. I am hoping we can get the AT&T to help in the areas where T-Mobile is weak or has no service at all.
Could not find a New Post button, so did a Reply.I tried the top of the line WIFI Ranger and ran into the problems already discussed with the poor park signals.
The park we are at has 6 antennae and yet connecting to them is almost impossible.
However, with T-Mobile, we have over 35MB down and over 20MB up. -
I pretty much re-created the wifi ranger type setup, but with other gear. Right now, I have 2 wireless access points. One for “Inside” the bus and one for “Outside” the bus. I quote that because right now they are BOTH inside the bus…. but I’m going to move the outside one outside soon. There are reasons for wanting to do this that are not just about poor RV park bandwidth. I do it to keep static IP’s for all my equipment that I’m running with my remote control app.
As for how to get it outside, this is what I’m going to do since I did it for the awning lights I added and it worked well. I’m going to run the cat5 into the Girard Awning electrical box that is on the rood and go outside from there. That box has a 1/2″ conduit inside the bus and you can show another cable up there through that. Then, I ran the wire just out the side of the cover for the box and then gooped it back up with roof goo. It’s held tight so I think this is an easy option. I think the only way any water would get in there is if the bus sank in a lake!
I like my setup. For us, we park our bus a home and the kids love (I mena LOVE) to camp in the driveway. SO, I use internet from my house in the bus while there. When on the road… I use my phone as a hotspot and supply the rest of the bus that way. So far… aside from a hitch I’m still figuring out…. it’s working great. Good luck!

I had WIFI and shortly after getting into Hotspot I took it out. I don’t have to pay for WIFI now and the Hotspot works consistantly and infinately better. All is well now with internet connection.
