Why A Bus Is The Ultimate Hurricane Survival Tool
As you know, I’m a newbie to the bus world and am enjoying traveling the USA in a motorhome. Since April, I’ve logged more than 7,000 miles…not too shabby considering the bus sat for three weeks in one resort and a month in another…and three weeks at Marathon getting some upgrades!
You probably also know that while I’m a Tennessee native, I reside in South Florida and live in the crosshairs of Hurricane Irma.
I was en route from northern Michigan to Marathon in Florida when Hurricane Irma appeared on the radar. So, I hunkered down and am dry camping in Nashville while I await the all clear to proceed with my trip. Depending on the path and intesity of the storm, it may be a while until I make it home…and I hope I have a home to return to after the storm.
In the meantime, I put together a story about why a motorhome is a very good thing to have when a storm is headed to your area and I hope you can help out this newbie and add comments to this thread with some other helpful advice.

When I take off, I’ll most likely head South through Alabama and if anyone has any suggestions for safe and secure, full hookup location in the Montgomery area for an overnight Monday, feel free to let me know. Yes, just about every place is booked with other evacuees.

Andy, how did you secure the Flxible? I sure hope that you have no damage at home.
We have stayed at the Capital City RV Park in Montgomery, AL, a couple of times. Nice park, spaces are large enough for a Prevost. It has a good rating of 8.4 on http://www.rvparkreviews.com.

Thanks Mark, that resort, like most of them, is sold out and filled with those evacuating from Florida. I did find a dry camping space at a friend’s radio station that’s surrounded by security cameras!
From there, I’m planning on heading to Gulf Shores, but I’ll let Irma make that decision for me.
The Flx is secured in a storage warehouse. Let’s hope Irma is kind to that area.

Andy, if you want to come 2 hours East, let me know. Full hookup and easy access. Looks like Crossville TN will be a little more out of the path of the bad weather.

Thanks Les! I’m going to wait until tomorrow to figure out the next step of the itinerary. Much of it will depend on how far West the storm travels. While I would like to get back to Florida, I’ll wait until the “return of the evacuee” traffc clears. It appears that the remnants of the storm will be bringing some wind and rain to TN in a few days.
While I’m due at Marathon on Monday, there’s no doubt in my mind that area will take a week or two to recover from the hurricane. So, I’ll probably take a route that will take me down the Eastern part the state.

Andy, I agree with Tim, great article and fuel for thought. I don’t like the label that some of my friends call me (pepper) as I’m like you say, a Boy Scout is always ready. I always end a trip with a full tank of fuel and water, which some say is more weight, but it’s better to have it and not need it than the other way around. Gail and I have been through 2 tornadoes and 1 flood living in Texas, so I whole heartily agree with you, a properly stocked motorhome is great to have on hand. I hope everything tuns out ok with your home and you make it home ASAP.
