  • Which is right, engine control or dash gauge? SEL

Posted by Charlie on March 17, 2017 at 1:41 pm

    Hi Everyone,

Driving my ’98 XL last night and the engine computer alerted to a “engine high pressure circuit” or similar alert, then a check engine light came on, then a stop engine light came on with the engine computer showing 26psi oil pressure. I looked at the dash gauge and it was 45psi+ and steady. I started to pull over, anyway, and the pressure on the engine computer ticked up: 27, 28, 29, then went off, the CEL and SEL went off and that was that.

Twenty minutes later, it all repeated.

The bus is now at Prevost (it is super nice that my house is only 30-40 minutes from them here in NJ!) and they have called over a Detroit tech to see what is what.

Based on my light reading here, I think I understand there are two oil pressure sensors, one that feeds the dash gauge and one that feeds the computer. Given they are not reading the same, I suspect one or both is faulty. Is there any general consensus or knowledge to trust one over the other?

My fingers crossed this is a simple sensor repair!

Charlie, This is anecdotal, but based on feedback here and with people I know in the trucking industry with large fleets they appear to agree that a substantial amount of their repair work is not associated with real problems, but is associated with sensor issues. The greatest problem area now will be the emissions systems, but every sensor appears to be part of their struggle to keep vehicles on the road.

This is anecdotal too, but maybe not directly related.

For no apparent reason, out of the clear blue my copilot will suddenly exclaim: WHAT THE H***! WHY DO YOU HAVE IT SO HOT IN HERE!!!!!! Every time this happens I am perfectly comfortable and I haven’t changed to temp controls for hours. I’ve speculated like Jon above that there is a problem with the sensor.

The sensors re the major failure item. Replacethe sensor and ths issue will probably go away. If the pressure was low the dash gauge would reflect the same reading

You can change out that sensor, but I understand that it is
    very expensive.
    I am sure that several
on this forum have done that and probably found it cost half of everything you
    own and more.
    Your sensor may be like
Zha Zha Gabor who told Jack Parr many years ago that she was a good house
keeper, then went on to explain that she had been divorced 7 times and kept the
    house each time.
So, the same may end up
applying to you if you decide to change out that sensor.
Personally, I would probably live with that
erratic temperature sensor, after all it only till death do you part.

3F … been there, done that. Like some and probably many of us, I’ve learned to adjust to the sensor. Seems to be working out pretty well.

Have replaced the oil pressure guage in the engine compartment which is true pressure in the system. Would guess all DD60s have this. If not it’s not expensive and gives you true pressure when other sensor guages may be faulty.

Raveson, there is an oil pressure gauge in the engine compartment?

Yes, to the right of the electric box.
