Where to tap an aux compressor into air system?
Posted by Richard on November 9, 2012 at 12:54 pmI would like to install an aux compressor into the bus air system and was going to ask the pros here for some guidance.
I am thinking the best mounting is in the compartment under the driver area, but where is the best place to tap into it for safety and efficiency?

In that comparement is a protection valve. There should be a tag on that protection valve that identifies where the converter may tap into it for auxiliary air to the house. Anywhere downstream from that point is fine.
If you go here and look up the specific pneumatic diagram for your coach it will show very accurately the valves and fittings, including their orientation which helps to identify if you are looking at the right part on the coach. I suspect your coach will have a water trap or separator downstream from the protection valve and a good spot is on the inlet side of the water trap so aux compressor moisture does not contaminate the house pneumatic systems.
I would recommend you insure you have a check valve on the outlet side of the aux compressor, preferably at the compressor itself.
The reason for being downstream from the protection valve is if you have a catastrophic failure of an air hose or fitting the protection valve as the name implies will not allow air pressure upstream to be depleted.

I forgot to mention your coach may not have this set up due to it’s age or if it was a coach that was not equipped with a protection valve. In that case I would suggest you communicate direct with Prevost for their advice on how to safely tap into the air system.
Air is so important in the operation of the coach it is dangerous to not consider your safety when modifying it.
Later models were provided with connection points, but yours may not have been.

I use a aux air compressor and it’s right inside the door below me, (provided I’m driving). I run the air right into the aux filter that Prevost mounted inside the door to the right and then from that pre-filter it goes into a newly mounted WIX AC-10 fiter and then out to solenoid valves to direct it.

I know you have an earlier model than most, but doesn’t your aux air feed from the secondary air via a protection valve to the aux tank that assures the aux system does not get air unless and until the primary and secondary systems reach about 75 PSI?
This is important to get correct because it could mislead an owner who might tap into the air system in such a way as to compromise the integrity of the brake systems which have priority over aux air.

This is the only Prevost drawing that I have had for my bus and it is pretty much how my bus is plumbed. It is a little hard to see at times but I have outlined in yellow the route from my wet tank to the front brake tank and aux. tank.

The path is engine compressor, dryer, wet tank, primary, secondary and then aux tank in that order. If you fill from the rear, you fill everything, if you fill from the front, you fill aux tank only.

If your aux system is filling simultaneously with the brake systems you have a problem that affects your safety. The aux system should not start receiving air until the brake systems have around 75 PSI.
You can verify this by working front to rear draining the air tanks. Aux, secondary, primary, wet and each one in sequence should have pressure remaining even thought the one downstream is at zero. If you have a catastrophic leak in the aux system, you do not want that loss of air to drop your brake system air along with it.

Am I right in thinking that you have removed the prevost Aux tank and replaced it with a tank compressor? looking at your photo your compressor/tank is located where my Aux tanks is located.
